How My Bar Registration Turned Into a Woke Identity Quiz
The Depth Charge ^ | June 1, 2025 | Johnny Dept

I’m a retired New York attorney.

For decades, renewing my attorney registration was straightforward. You paid the fee, confirmed your status, and moved on with your life.

Not anymore.

Now, in 2025, the Unified Court System has decided they need to know whether I identify as transgender, nonbinary, intersex, or “none of the above.”

I wish I was joking. See for yourself:

This is not just a form. It’s an ideological loyalty test disguised as “data collection.”

These questions are optional but it’s in little tiny lettering — and I might have filled it out had I not read the fine print. And let’s be real: if you decline to answer, that gets recorded too.

Why does the State of New York need to know how I identify to let me remain a retired attorney in good standing?

When did a basic license renewal become an episode of identity politics?

It’s not about tolerance—it’s about forced affirmation.

It’s not about inclusion—it’s about compliance.

And if you’re not paying attention, this is exactly how they normalize thought policing: one check box at a time.

🧠 Final Thought:

This isn’t about whether you’re gay, straight, or Martian. It’s about whether the state has the right to demand ideological conformity to access your career, your certifications, or even your livelihood.

Today it’s lawyers.

Tomorrow it’s your accountant.

Then your doctor.

This is soft-totalitarianism in a dress shirt.

Unlike Starman417, who lifts the works of others for his blog, appeal2 writes his own stuff.

Actually, I was admitted in 1985 so that’s 40 years ago. I had a good sense to move out of that godforsaken asshole in 2012. Yes, I knew exactly what was coming. I’ve written about it predicted it and lived it the final straw that broke the camels back for me was when I got pulled over by a New York City cop because I was holding my cell phone in my hand and issued a ticket that was it. I had had it and I was gone.
