When I was about 18 or 19 I was somewhat of a dare devil and did something very stupid. Some friends and I were camping and fishing about 170 miles north west of Montreal in Quebec in the Verendrye Provincial park. After breakfast, we heard a cub bawling in a tree close to our camper. We cleaned up after breakfast and getting our fishing gear ready, and the cub was still up in the tree, about 20 feet up. No mama bear in sight, so I volunteered to shinny up the tree and rescue the cub. As I got to within about 3 feet of it, it was a bit larger than I thought, probably around 50 or 60 lbs. It took a swipe at me with claws that looked about 2 inches long. It suddenly dawned on me that this was not my best idea ever. I also wondered how far or worse how close mama bear was. If she came I would be dinner as I was still a good 10 - 15 feet up, with a pissed off full grown bear climbing up the tree and a crazy cub above, and my friends would probably run for their lives. I got down, went to the camper and splashed cold water on my head and face. Heard a thrashing in the underbrush, my friends yelling, looked out the camper door, and mama bear was at the bottom of the tree, and the cub was coming down on it’s own! It knew how to get down all along, but was a bit scared until mama came. That was the last bear cub rescue attempt for me.

Badgers will take out small or baby pythons, also eggs, but is no match for a larger python that will eat anything it can catch.

The issue is, would you be trading one problem with another.

You’re right, larger pythons eat anything they catch, the problem is catching honey badgers.

Last year, the Florida legislature passed, and Governor DeSantist signed into law, a bill making defense against a bear which is threatening your life, your buildings or your pets, perfectly legal.

The law became effective on July 1, 2024.

Not at all! I was referencing the stupid laws that game and fish..the state, would charge you with for killing a bear “just because” its killing a dog.

Bear is delicious. Grilled, smoked, in soup. Stew, Kabobs...

Never hunted them myself. But I have heard that many hunters won’t hunt Bear anymore after seeing them cleaned. Seems they look just like a human skinned.

It’s Florida!

Sharks will get you in the ocean.
Alligators will get you in the river or lake.
Bears will get you in the woods.
Pythons will get in the swamps.
Cougars will get you in the bars.

No argument there.

One wonders who the SOB was who turned Burmese pythons loose in Florida…

Another week, another gruesome bear attack: this time a fatal one, claiming the life of an elderly man and his dog. And – mind you – not in Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, or any other of the mountainous states, but in Florida. A massive black bear, reported to weigh 300 pounds, mauled to death an 89-year-old Florida man and his devoted dog — the first ursine killing in state history. New York Post reported: “Robert Markel’s granddaughter called 911 on the morning of May 5, after seeing a 263-pound bear killing her dad’s dog right outside his camper, situated on...

An 88-year-old man and a dog were killed in apparently separate bear attacks near the victim’s home in Florida, officials said. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call shortly after 7 a.m. Monday involving a “bear encounter.” The attacks occurred “some time apart” on Monday, and the man and the dog were found within a couple of hundred yards of the area, according to FWC spokesperson George Reynaud. His daughter saw a bear attack the dog and then went looking for her father, who is believed to have been attacked earlier on Monday, Reynaud said

Well, bears must be tougher here. One lady here spayed the hell out of the bear and lost her leg anyways. In northern Alberta we make jokes about those carrying spray. The rest of us sane ones like 45-70, 12 gauge, 44, 454, or even 308. Spray is insanity.

Oh, as a side note to the riot side, we had to carry spray on my 1st tour in Bosnia. They sprayed us in Winnipeg so we would know the effect. Over half of my platoon could easily still function. My vision was blurry etc, but mind over matter, and I was still able to mess up that cop. Not much faith in that stuff. If I come across you on a big rock hiding out and fending off a bear, I’ll be happy to help as I do care about my southern neighbours that aren’t libtarded heh.

Haha I got you thanks for the clarification!

I’ve killed a few, spring Black Bear were sweet tasting, burger and sausage.

However, I once loaned a rifle to a friend from out of town, he killed one and asked me to help him get it out, the next evening after work (he’d field dressed it) we went after it.

While caping it out I noticed a white parasite, the diameter of a human hair, and maybe two inches long, coming out of the meat, the more I looked the more I saw.

Trichnosis? I don’t know, but this was before the requirement (spring hunts only) where you had to harvest the quarters and back straps.

Needless to say I refused his offer of bear burger later lol

(Even though he wasn’t required to, he did harvest the meat/which he froze to kill anything)

There's definitely a bias in many people's minds in favor of firearms, but for bear deterrence the spray is the better option.

No, it definitely isn't.

Spray is not as effective as a good firearm.

The effectiveness of spray has been pushed b y anti’s to protect the bears not people.

The studies showing spray to be more effective are ripe with false information and bias.

Firearms work far better in protecting humans then bears.

I have hunted bears for over 50 years.

I have skinned many of bears never thought they looked human like.

They are very good eating if field dressed and prepared properly

At a church fellowship super a while ago, a man brought bear stew. I don’t know what spices he used, but it was delicious.
