Then, when you look at who has been promoting AI and the unquestioning acceptance of its arrival and benefits (on the part of we the sheep), my skepticism becomes even more profound.
Have any of you read a thoughtful article of the detriments, negative side of AI? A well thought-out commentary would be very helpful.
Thank You!!!
Yesterday I was completing an expense report for my job. We use an online system that seems to use a bit of AI.
Two separate hotels had invoices that only differed by pennies. It confused the almighty AI, which automatically fills in some data and triggered a whole bunch of alerts that prevented me from moving forward.
The company expert was out so I didn’t have anyone to ask about it. I finally removed the two hotels to save for my next report and moved on. AI is just wonderful
I use Chat Gpt 100 times a day at least. I ask it questions and make up my own mind regarding the answers. It’s basically a search tool for the internet. Instead of me scanning a million sites it can do the calculations in an second. But some of the answers can be little screwy or vague so you have to think for yourself.
I use Grok multiple times a day. I’ve been using it the past couple of days for Kentucky Derby handicapping strategies. It has literally cut hours from the process already. I’ll let you know if it pays off next Saturday.
so am/was I... but!... I am finding Copilot and Grok are answering questions on nonpolitical things surprisingly well. I also find interest in the way it explains the context in which the search term was/being used.
So far, using the number of Fake pictures out there as a reference, so far, I am not seeing/reading anything to put a notch on the downside column...
We use AI at work quite a bit (Startup Technology company)
AI can be very focused and remarkable, but limited to it’s narrow subject matter. Or it can be quite broad but limited in depth.
For the most part, I use it as a very upgraded search engine. I still fact check, but I get to what I need to verify much quicker.
AI is a fraud.
I use several AI’s depending on my need. For program development in python, scripting dialogue or Writing stories I use claude.ai . I pay a subscription to claude.ai but there’s a free service available. I use different ai’s for music and song development, another for still picture development, and another for video development.. I see AI as a creativity enhancer , much as CNC machines enhance your metalworking skills. I have just seen an article about an ai to help go from still pictures to 3d mesh models. Always more to learn. None at magnus robot fighter level yet.
AI will evolve into a corrupted tool, no different than mankind. Everything mankind gets ahold of gets corrupted.
I’m waiting for a Russian English-Language of AI, so at least I can get non-woke answers to politically-charged questions. Obviously, if the questions relate to Russia in some way, those answers would have to be treated with suspicion...but the wokeness of American AI infests virtually EVERYTHING I’m interested in.
That same AI may speed up the development of a life-saving medical technology by a factor of 10.
Our first "astronaut" to Mars will probably be AI, and the AI will report its observations back to fit its audience. Those reports are going to be amazing.
AI is just a tool - a force-multiplier for the human mind.

Re: Cease and Desist – Defamatory and Misleading Statements
Dear ma_che62,
I write as legal counsel for our client, whose interests have been adversely affected by your recent public commentary. In your statement, you candidly refer to yourself as “a troglodyte, cave man, or idiot” while simultaneously expressing gross skepticism regarding artificial intelligence and its purported benefits. Your remarks are not only a manifest display of ill-informed judgment but also a reckless promulgation of unfounded assertions that disparage technologies which, in fact, serve to advance our society and culture.
It is our position that your baseless pronouncements—replete with inflammatory metaphors and a flagrant disregard for empirical evidence—call into serious question your ability to engage in reasoned public discourse. Such conduct has the potential to inflict significant reputational harm upon our client and others who have ardently supported innovation in this field.
Accordingly, this letter serves as formal notice that if you fail to immediately retract the aforementioned statements and desist from disseminating similar defamatory content in the future, we will have no alternative but to initiate legal proceedings against you. We are prepared to pursue all available remedies under defamation and related tort claims to vindicate our client’s rights and reputation.
You are advised to consult with independent legal counsel and respond in writing within ten (10) days of the date of this letter, confirming that you will comply with these demands. Should you neglect to do so, please be advised that litigation will commence without further notice.
We’re actually working on a policy at my company related to AI now. A lot of people don’t realize that if you upload anything to have AI summarize or help you with it that the data is then retained by the large language models forever and you have no control over it anymore.
Intellectual property, financial information, s/w design, procedures, you name it people are uploading it into the wild not thinking about this stuff.
We plan to only white list limited inhouse AI tools and only allow informational requests from the model that is anonymized, but even then the tools can look at IP addresses and geography so you still have to be careful what you ask the model or the big data companies might be able to put 2+2 together....oooh this IP address belonging to this guy that works at such and such company just asked about how to conduct a recall....hmmmm bet they are getting ready to announce something...
It’s going to get ugly before people realize what they are doing and pull back hard.
Soon, regarding invoices, one will have only a machine to discuss the invoice with.
AI is making and writing the judgements in many courts.
I work in the AI/ML business - and have been a data guy (first datawarehousing, then business intelligence and reporting, then AI/ML).
So here’s my OPINION about AI
Firstly - it isn’t yet “intelligence” - it is massive pattern-recognition, categorization and classification. But that’s for now.
Secondly - it will bring benefits to all societies, but also a lot of bad - a LOT of bad.
The negative sides of AI are:
1. We will stop thinking
2. We need to still be sceptical - AI is only regurgitating the data it is fed - if it is fed nonsense, it will spout nonsense. you still should cross-check
3. It can be manipulated - again, based on Data inputs
4. It is overwhelmingly BAD for under 18 year olds - they will not develop critical thinking or the habit of researching.
My teenage kids do not have smartphones - and access to a desktop only for an hour a day to do schoolwork (schools have gone crazy putting everything on messenger etc.)
AI is an incredibly powerful helpful tool, but is double edged. while it can help you do things you couldnt do on your own, it will also spoon feed you information so you have to make no effort to learn it on your own. which leads to ignorance and dependence on this tool. interesting quandry
“AI” is essentially computing a large number of connections between chunks of information. To aid in consistency and speed a large number of those connections are pre-calculated and stored.
Because this connection process is analogous to human memory or thinking it is described as “AI” and as systems to do this for general purpose rather than just limited scope/purpose, “genAI”
The major problems are these:
- Like a child, it can make mistakes based on the connections it’s made. The current term for these are “hallucinations” and range from wrong inferences to entirely fictitious information (e.g., lawyers who got in hot water for using AI to provide a brief; the judge was bright enough to know the cases they cited weren’t real)
- Conversely people can tune or ‘train’ the AI to produce more accurate results. It’s not a theory but a known fact that many companies working with AI are leftist and have already been caught out ‘training’ AI to never give answers a leftist might object to — in other words useless ranging to propaganda. (e.g., asking for a joke about Trump; asking for a joke about Biden — those are the mild examples).
- As others noted, the companies offer their services at low or no cost — and like every other ‘free’ tech product YOU are the product being sold. Everything sent to one of these public AIs is now in their model and can be sussed out by others or used by that company for their ends. (e.g., one person above noted policies around AI use; I’ve been involved in isolated topical AI projects to protect data and intellectual property).
- Not incidentally the more they grow and stop being just cute toys, the more resources they require, to the point where tech leaders are trying to start or reactivate nuclear power plants — and *not* so you can make your coffee in the morning without a blackout or have someone drive their EV.
In short very handy; IMO like having a bright kid nearby; and potentially very dangerous both if leftists get their way with these AND if they manage to harm us in the process of trying. Nonetheless everyone should get familiar with what they do and how to recognize “AI”-produced text, sound, and video.
AI has done wonders for cat videos!
