I asked Grok: “In the past 10 years in the entire world, as far as you know, how many people were killed by each of the following? Pit bulls. Border collies. Cheetahs.”

I asked Grok: “In the past 10 years in the entire world, as far as you know, how many people were killed by each of the following? Pit bulls. Border collies. Cheetahs. No need for a long explanation. Just the numbers will be fine.”

This is the answer that it gave:

Pit bulls: ~400 (U.S. and Canada only; global data unavailable)

Border collies: 0

Cheetahs: 3

Are you a posting policeman? Do you personally set the standards for posts?

Whatever happened to "Live and let live", or ordinary Christian tolerance?

In other words, "Lighten up Francis".

I’m guessing the poster going off is a Pit Bull owner?

The “stupid programmed AI thingee” is a neural network of massive size that has been trained on billions of documents and statistical facts.

I’m not saying it can’t, or doesn’t, have bias - the chosen training documents can have bias.

Outside that they’re a powerful tool that I use daily. It turns ‘googling’ upside down. Instead of search on keywords and having to scour the search results for hours to find what you want, the AI is basically doing it for you.

Something as simple as ‘deaths per animal’ isn’t something I’d hesitate to trust.

“Garbage In Garbage Out”

That’s exactly correct. I worked on a task group studying dog bites and that’s what we found. The police reports were riddled with errors because the people involved just filled out answers to finish the forms. For instance, it was no use asking people what breed of dog it was because they couldn’t identify breeds
(ex: anything brown with a black face was a German Shepherd).
The vast majority of the dogs involved were mutts but were assigned a breed anyway.

Only valuable info if the data would tell us the population number of each breed.

we can just say or do anything we want?

We prefer to curb foul and abusive language; but, there aren't any topical restrictions. The assumption is that there are many things worthy of discussion. What interests one can usually interest another. If you feel that site rules have been broken, please draw attention to them.

Other than that, yes, pretty much anything can be discussed. There always seem to be disruptive retorts, however. Manners are not well practiced anywhere these days.

I ain’t no christian, BTW

Even under rules of common civility one can be more tolerant and respectful of others. There are not usually penalties for good behavior.

Statistic, NOT POSSIBLE! Bitten, maybe, killed, no way.

Its like global warming/climate change claims. Common sense tells you its not happening.

Actually, it's Claude that I'm referring to. Working with Claude is like working with a mid-level-at-best developer.

It's far faster to untar a generic software module directory, rename it, and search for and address all occurrences of 'TODO:' than to iterate with Claude (especially using cscope).

Claude generates a good amount of code fairly quickly, but then I've spent days telling it to fix bugs, with those fixes inevitably inducing new bugs.

And, if you'll listen to just about every AI coding video there is one word that recurs with great frequency, that word is 'prototype'. Many of these AI coding sessions are just to produce prototype user interfaces rather than finished products.

I still use Claude to crank out some UI code, but only because Javascript is "beneath me". :)

True. And if you adjust for the number of dogs, there isn’t a big difference between Rottweilers and Pitbulls. There is however a big difference between German Shepherds and Pitbulls.

I would be doubtful of these numbers because of the Cheetah answer.

As far as I can tell there have been exactly 2 cases of "human killed by cheetah". One in 2007 and one in 2017.

So I really doubt that number.

Bit or clawed by cheetah, very possible.

Killed, not likely.

Pit Bulls: 284 deaths

And the above is US only, not Canada.

There have been pit bull deaths in UK, also. UK has severely restriced the largest type of pit bull, which they call the American Bully XL. According to Wikipedia,

The Bully XL was responsible for 10 of the 19 deaths caused by dogs in the UK in the period between 2021 and 2023, and in December 2023, the UK Government added the breed to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, making it illegal to sell, breed, abandon or have a Bully XL in public without a lead and muzzle in England and Wales.

the quality of FR has deteriorated massively in the past 5 years or so.

Corresponding with the escalating deterioration of the public since the shutdowns made people crazy and the coming of age of the most dumbed-down, coddled, addicted and essentially ignorant generations in American history—but go ahead, blame FR.
