Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has announced that effective May 7, 2025, all adult U.S. citizens must present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification or a valid passport to board domestic flights and access federal facilities.
This enforcement marks the culmination of the REAL ID Act, originally passed in 2005 following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations to enhance the integrity and security of state-issued identification documents.
On December 17, 2018, President Trump signed the REAL ID Act Modification for Freely Associated States Act, Public Law 115-323.
“If you plan on traveling, we need your help to prevent delays and to prove your identity. Get a REAL ID. Starting May 7th, you will need a REAL ID to travel by air or to visit federal buildings in the United States,” Noem said in a video statement.
“These IDs keep our country safe because they help prevent fraud and enhance security. Please do your part to protect our country. Go today, and don’t delay.”

We’re supposed to be pro real id now?
New Mexico dragged it’s feet on this forever. In 2015 military bases required Real ID to enter, as a contractor my license was no good, so I had to get a Passport Card.
I never wanted to fly again, so taking in the required stuff to up grade my drivers license seemed like a waste of time. I could renew my Idaho drivers license by mail. Then I turned 70 and comes the dawn. Now I have to renew my license in person. So I figured take in the crap and get the Star on my drivers license. My mother passed away last September. After that things required me to fly to the Midwest. It sucked but I had the damn Star on the ID so no problem. My military service years ago caused me to fly, back then you didn’t have to jump through your anal orifice to get on an airplane and it was enjoyable Now the airlines can have it. I never want to fly again. If the Star becomes a condition for voting fine.
Florida was giving them in 2014 when I got my first one as a Florida resident.
Yes, got mine 15 years back when my State first offered them.
I was born here. My parents were born here. My indigenous roots were here before Cortez. I have seen the black sands of Washington, the horseshoe crabs of Delaware, the Connecticut boulders placed by the glaciers, the thatched roofs of Plymouth Plantation, the whole layout at Cape Cana eral - the burial site of Apollo 1, the beauty of the Rockies, the Mojave desert, the wackiness of Portland, SoCal in the ‘80s, and all to say that since I got my state-issued ID card, I’m staying right here at home.
Texas has been issuing Real ID compliant drivers’ licenses and ID cards since October 2016. It’s been so long that the first compliant Texas ID’s have already expired.
Yep!
I guess saying you ought to get out more would be slightly ludicrous. 😊 Be safe. Home and boring work for me now.
I don’t have one and I’m going to do my best not to get one. I have a passport and have had for 25 years. If I need to fly I will use my passport. Although they ruined flying for me years ago. I believe 2013 was the last time I got on an airplane. And I hope it is the last time.
I can’t say enough bad things about the TSA so I won’t bother saying anything.
Now that we have the DOGE team, I am waiting for them to match the REAL IDs with the Registered Voters across the USA.
It will be interesting to see how many Registered Voters do not have a REAL ID where the REAL ID states whether they are US Citizens or not.
We have real ID because of illegals and terrorists
We pay massive sales tax because it's the only way to tax illegal aliens in the underground cash economy.
We pay excessive auto insurance rates because of uninsured illegal aliens operating under false IDs.
We pay fraudulent welfare benefits to illegals receive welfare under multiple false identifies.
I noticed a lot of Real ID businesses popped up quickly.
My DMV is useless. I think this is crap. And I don’t like the star idea. Is it gold?
Well several states didn't want to issue secure ID's. California didn't want illegal aliens to be kicked out based on Real ID's, so they have both a Real ID version and an insecure version. Don't try buying firearms or ammunition with anything but a Real ID compliant ID. Since several states dragged their feet, the deadlines were extended. Now that all states are on board and have been issuing Real ID compliant ID's for awhile, the TSA can start enforcing the law. In some of the states that have only recently started issuing Real ID compliant ID's, there are still lots of people lacking Real ID compliant ID's. They need to make appointments with their states' DMV's or whatever state agencies issue ID's and get an updated ID before their current ones expire.
Texas has been only issuing compliant ID's so long that the earliest ones have already expired. There are no currently valid Texas ID's that are not compliant with Real ID requirements. I didn't bother renewing my Texas driver's license early, because I had a passport card in my wallet that was still valid to cover the short interval when my driver's license would not be in compliance based on an earlier deadline.
“””My Alabama DL has no star on it, renewed in December.”””
I believe NO STAR means that you renewed your DL without giving the AL DMV proof of citizenship.
Illegal aliens don’t need an ID so why do we need one???
What about Illegals ? No Id and no pay ?
How many IDs do I have to have? I am old and was born here a looong time ago. Until they re-register ALL voters I am not playing.
I heard a flag is also compliant, is this true?
I don't want unknown people flying on airplanes. Anyway, ID's are pretty useful for other things. Try looking at real estate, or test driving cars without an ID. Try buying restricted prescription medicines, firearms, ammunition, alcohol, entering night clubs, secure government buildings, even private buildings without a trusted secure ID.
If you don’t have it, they will ask you a bunch of questions to prove who you are.
