So it's not an entirely new idea being proposed here by New York State representative and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. The Democratic Socialist put out a video explaining his plan to reduce price gouging — government-owned and run grocery stores in the city.

Real life story. Twice in the past when every bit of frozen yogurt was sold out on a sale, there was a good amount of Vanilla Bean flavor left. Twice.

Years ago I heard a visiting Soviet interviewed who complimented the news guy by saying “Your government food distribution system in the United States is far more efficient than ours is.”
He was referring to agricultural harvesting and shipment, warehouses, trucks, supermarkets and Costco type big box stores which he assumed were owned by the government here.
Now they will be.

Didn't Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson say he was going to build a chain of city-owned grocery stores that would bring groceries to residents of Chicago's "food deserts" ?
I wonder what happened to that brilliant idea ?

I went to a microbiology conference where someone was discussing the challenges of food recalls. The distribution system in the US is so efficient that food can be sold in grocery stores in 13 states before anyone determines there is a problem with it. We literally cannot stop the distribution of tainted food in a timely manner, before it hits grocery shelves.
Our distribution system is great. Our recall system could use a little more work.
