Mass teacher layoffs are reshaping America’s education system

Public education is facing a crisis as mass teacher layoffs sweep across the country. Thousands of educators are losing their jobs, and the consequences are already being felt in schools and communities. This isn’t just about numbers on a budget sheet. These are real teachers, real students, and real families being affected by decisions that will reshape the future of education in America.

In Massachusetts, the situation is especially severe. The Department of Education is slashing nearly 50% of its workforce, eliminating over 1,300 positions. The official reasoning? Cost-cutting and streamlining operations. But critics warn that these cuts will hit the most vulnerable students the hardest. Special education programs, school meal funding, and essential support services are all at risk. When resources shrink, class sizes grow. When programs disappear, students suffer.

Down sizing as a method to reduce employees bypasses Unions and any other impediments.

The people that are losing their jobs are not educators. They are just pocketing our money. Living off the government fat. I don’t know any teachers in our school district that Trump cut their jobs. What a bunch of B/S.

It’s absurd to have 8-12 kids in a classroom. And go back to the single child desks...this long table method is cr**.

Public education is facing a crisis as mass teacher layoffs sweep across the country.

If one digs a little deeper they will find that teacher layoff doesn't mean classroom teachers. Just the bloated administrative and support positions all of which are classified as teachers in order to benefit from the school bond votes to raise teacher pay.

Check out any main high school in Wikipedia and it will have a student to teacher ration of something like 15:1 but if you walk the hallways you will find every room with 30-40 students. How can that be? The answer again is all the administrative and support staff; principals, psychologists, counselors, coordinators, department heads, etc, classified as teachers.

When my daughter was researching stuff before she went to college in 2000 she told me an interesting factoid. Of all entering freshmen with declared majors, education Majors had the lowest SAT scores.

Conflation is a popular and often effective propaganda tool.

Massachusetts could fire half of the non teacher staff and streamline their operations thereby thus improving the efficiency of the system immensely.

Most of the useless staff in the bloated school board office building complexes are also classified as teachers in order to get in on the periodic public votes to increase teacher pay.

How about cutting administors rather than teachers? Let teachers run their classrooms. Let principals run their schools. Let local school boards set the policy. The way it used to be in most places.

The public education system doesn’t need to be a jobs program for adults. Nor does it need to be hive of woke activists trying to turn the schools into leftist indoctrination centers.

[The other part being big groups of parents who could not care less about their kids' education.]

If all parents gave an actual damn about their children there would be no students in public school.

“As Walter Williams liked to point out, Education majors are just about the the dumbest students on any college campus.”

Except for Journalism students, and then you have the various “XXXX Studies” majors. And that said, perhaps the smartest guy I’ve ever met has a “Social Sciene Area Major” undergraduate because he had too many interests and took too broad a range of classes as an undergraduate

They can close the Department of Education and not have fired a single teacher.

The joke on campus used to be if you wanted a degree just drive by the education department with your window down and they’d toss one in for you.

If we need someone to check our kids’ “junk” to make sure they have the correct genitals, we can take them down to the airport and get the TSA professionals to do it. It’s not the job of the teachers to worry about whether our kids have the correct “junk” as “assigned” by the hospitals where they were born. Doctors know the difference between male and female genitals.
