A flat tax of 14% with no deductions of any kind would balance the budget.

Want to exempt someone from taxes?

Exempt retirees drawing SS benefits.

This is great for optics. I worry about the long-term. This is adding to Romney’s 47%... those who are not subject to taxes won’t care about tax policy or most other fiscal policies. That’s ripe for abuse by a future government.

I would much rather see a nominal tax across the board to everyone has some skin in the game. Here’s my tax brackets:

$0 - poverty line: no tax
Above poverty to $100,000: 5% flat tax
$100,001 - $150,000: 10% flat tax
Above $150,000: feel free to use progressive tax tables.

“I just don’t see the government only accepting only .24 cents on that one dollar over 150k under such a tax scheme.”

Same scheme we have now.

I get your point about low-income people having skin in the game regarding taxation. Indeed, if the perception is that income tax is something that only paid by the upper-middle and upper income earners, then low-income people become so divorced from the concept of income taxes that they don’t care how high income taxes are or how the funds are spent... and thus the tax-and-spend Democrats become a more appealing option to such folks.

I'd much rather see a VAT/ fed sales tax.

That does NOTHING to promote domestic industry like the tariff.

I think every American should pay taxes if some pay taxes.

As I said I get we use that now. The difference though subtle is ALL income is supposedly taxed but in truth below about 40k most do not pay any because of the the credits they get.

SO much wrong, If a person making 149000 does not pay taxes, the person making 150000 will be taxed to an income below 149000, making the higher earnings recce less net income. Fast track to real civil unrest and just flat out wrong.

LOL. That is not how mariginal income taxation works.

Rush Limbaugh used Yachts as an example. If you tax them heavily, the yacht builders don’t build them, at least in the US. I think he was right on this, but taxing people who have great wealth, is better than taxing the vast middle class. A Yacht registered in the US, should be taxed yearly at a certain PCT of value. Let these rich prigs pay for the right to have a floating palace with the protection of the US Navy. If they want to ply the seas, let them provide their own security.

Just an example of a way to get more funds.

When veterans with an honorable discharge reach 65 they should be exempt form all forms of taxation and their vote should count double.
