A “dirty truth” about the Amazon forest and the reduction of CO2 levels. The Amazon forest is not a great sequester of CO2, I repeat it is not! The forests trees die and become termite food and eventually termite farts which is methane. Methane is a global warming gas but I am not concerned. It soon breaks down into CO2 and water via hydroxylation with free radicals in the atmosphere which also does not concern me. The only CO2 that the Amazon forests and all forests remove from the atmosphere is in organic sediments that flow down the rivers and are buried and become rock strata. An added bonus is they become oil and gas in a few million years.
The lungs of the earth are the oceans. They produce most of the oxygen via blue green algae. The vast majority of CO2 is dissolved in our oceans. The warmer the oceans the less CO2 can remain in solution in the Ocean. Since the last ice age the oceans have been warming and it is releasing CO2.
CO2 is plant food, do not worry about it.
