The United States probably assumed the mantle of leader of the world’s great powers in 1918, when its military power began to expand rapidly and it began to take advantage of its massive size and sophistication of its economy.

“The key weakness of the US is its political system, which is archaic and has been racked by partisan conflict.
America’s federal system leaves substantial power to states and localities, ensuring a degree of local democratic control but creating all manner of “not in my backyard” problems.
The commitment of the incoming Trump administration to both democracy and internationalism is in serious question.”
I would actually agree with this point but not for the reasons he states. Our current system opens us up to having our leaders corrupted and influenced by foreign powers to the detriment of our own people.
there is only one great power, the US.
then there is a couple of almost greats including China and Great Britain.
Then there are all the rest which are just a bunch of has been or never was, including Russia.
France and Britain aren’t what they used to be, but it would be foolish to ignore the power of China. The US as sole superpower myth got us into massive trouble under Clinton and Bush and we should probably recognize that we aren’t the supreme power in the world. Russia or the Soviet Union certainly wasn’t a “never was.”
Russia was always a POS country.
The only great thing Russia ever did was steal Nazi rocket technology and steal American nuclear technology.
