If someone has no registered firearms, and so obstensively is not "on the radar", but wishes to carry concealed for strickly self-defense purposes, would obtaining a concealed carry permit be a mistake?
In Arizona, concealed carry is allowed without a permit, except in drinking establishments. So that is the only advantage I could see in Arizona. But how about traveling through reciprocal carry states?
`
FWIW...I don’t remember registering my pistols in Illinois and Illinois requires gun registration. I’ll have to look into that.
Be careful of school zones. The Federal Gun-Free School Zones law only allows the exemptions if you hold a resident CCL for the state where the school zone is located. Although you may have reciprocity with another state and can generally depend on the laws of that state for allowable carry rules and places, your home state CCL or a state’s non-resident CCL is usually NOT valid in the reciprocal state’s Federal Gun-Free School Zones areas.
Last FWIW then I’ll shut up and sit down.
There are no criminal penalties for not registering a gun in Illinois.
If you want to "carry" in States that have reciprocity agreements with your State, you need your State's permit. Simple. It's why I have a West Virginia permit.
That should be investigated. West Virgini imposes no such requirement. Neither does (east) Virginia.
The answer is if your state has a registration law, you would have problems carrying an “unregistered firearm”. AZ does not have a registration requirement.
The USCCA has a free app that will show you what states have reciprocity and the laws for each state for your smart phone. Generally, the states that do not have reciprocity for Arizona are the bluest states, i.e. NY, CT, Mass, CA, WA, OR, etc.
How many times have you shot someone and had to be defended?
For example, people who love their health insurance have probably never been sick.
I had a shooting and camping weekend last week. My AR has always been flawless. I didn’t oil it before hitting the range this time. After 6 mags it started failing. Not jamming just not extracting. I saw the bolt was not retracting in the carrier. I took some oil out of my bag and oiled the chamber and the bolt. It started running perfectly. Always run a wet bolt.
My parents lived in NYC and I had to look into their laws at one point, which do require that you only carry a listed and registered firearm, one per license.
It doesn’t surprise me that California also requires this, but it is very, very unusual. Offhand, I’m not surge that exixts anywhere else (except California and NYC). Several suburban NYC counties have permit to purchase and 100% registration.
I have a Massachusetts non-resident Class A license, and there is no such requirement there, at least not yet.
Or get an AK-47.
Words to live by.
I’d prefer to be accurate. I was shooting lights out at 150 yards with iron sights. Hit the plate every time. Switched to a target and was in the red every shot. Can’t come close to that with my AK.
MUST have State issue permit to carry in other States.
Anyone thinking having a firearm puts them on some kind of list or on some kind of “radar” such that they are thinking twice about carrying a firearm isn’t mature enough to carry a gun.
If such a thing as a “list” can scare someone into not exercising their right to carry, then they are too cowardly to carry.
I have good car insurance, but have never been in a wreck since I started with them.
Second Call Defense recently did a bunch of upgrades at no price increases. Heard a bunch from their founder (Sean Maloney -who started the FASTER program in Ohio helping to arm teachers) and testimonials from people who have defended themselves with firearms on many gun podcasts.
They’re good gun people.
Don’t over-think this. If you bought a firearm from a licensed gun dealer, you filled out a Form 4473. The ATF is not supposed to use these to create a registry. Do you think they obey that law? Did you ever buy ammunition with a credit card, do you think that was not recorded? Did you ever buy a holster, magazine, speed loader, or other carry gear with a credit card? Recorded, no doubt.
Now, suppose you are one of the, say, 50,000 gun owners with no paper trail. What are you going to do if gun ownership is made illegal and guns must be turned in? Bury everything in the back yard? Then what?
I say, make the decision on the convenience of reciprocity and other factors. Join GOA and NRA. When the government bans guns they are more likely to kill you for burying it than turning it.
And by the way, if you ever, heaven forbid, are forced to use your firearm in self defense, which will look better to a jury? You with a firearms training course and a concealed carry permit, or you simply exercising a Constitutional right?
Just by posting here your on the radar.
There used to be distinctions in Idaho, North Dakota, and Wyoming. I believe those have been reformed and eliminated.
I have not checked in the last several months, so it is important to check the states you are interested in before assuming the law applies to you in any particular state.
There you are. Thanks for chiming in. Hope you’re doing well.
