My understanding of shorting stocks is that you make a bid within a window of time to buy stocks that you believe are going to fall in price. If the prices rises in that window, you take a bath on it.

They didn’t bet anywhere near $300m. They used a Put option, which is where you are entitled to sell the stock at a certain price. If they bought a Put with a low price, it would have been very cheap since the Trump stock has been going up, and nobody would want to sell for the lower Put price.
So they went broke?
