A DISAPPOINTING CHOICE
Powerline Blog ^ | July 15, 2024 | John Hinderaker

Posted on 07/15/2024 8:18:39 PM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

I think [Vance] is a bad decision for a number of reasons.

At 39, Vance is too young...with less than two years in the Senate as his only political office, he has nowhere near the experience that a VP should bring to a ticket.

Vance, who is unknown to the general public, won’t bring Trump a single new vote. In fact, there is no reason to think that he is any kind of political powerhouse: in his only race, he ran far behind the other statewide Republican candidates in Ohio.

...Vance’s political views are...half-baked. He is still evolving...he denounced Trump viciously in 2016, while now he is an acolyte. In 2016, it was dumb of Vance to describe Trump as an “idiot,” as “noxious,” as one who is either “a cynical asshole” or “America’s Hitler,” just as it is dumb for Democrats to say the same things today. Vance’s never-Trumpism showed poor judgment, and 2016 is not exactly ancient history. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019...we don’t need a president or vice president who is still on a voyage of self-discovery.

...on foreign policy...he strikes me as something close to an isolationist. He attacks the Iraq war in a manner barely distinguishable from leftists, and his statement that “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” is flippant at best. The world needs a strong America; I am not sure Vance agrees.

...Vance is a bright guy and a pretty solid conservative, I don’t think he is...ready for prime time, and I don’t think he makes a perceptible contribution to the ticket. Trump had a number of much better choices available, and I think his selecting Vance reflects the poor judgment to which Trump is occasionally prone.

Vance is a very good man and would/will make an excellent vice-president.

However, I don’t think the Senate should be deprived of his talents, most especially considering the proclivity of Ohio to elect RINOs and the shortage of senators of his ability to submit needed bills.

He is unknown to most Americans as of this moment.

Let’s see what the reaction is when he speaks to the convention.

And let’s see how he is received on the campaign Trail.

I know he’s going to be Public Enemy Number One with the Liberals and the media. But that would be true of anyone picked by Trump to be his running mate.

Hinderaker sounds butthurt Trump didn't pick his guy. Or gal. Whatever.

Karl Rove is upset over Vance being chosen. That’s enough proof for me to support it.

No thanks, I’ve read enough complaining in the excerpt.

Vance, who is unknown to the general public

So has Hindraker never heard of Hillbilly Elegy? Vance is very well-known to the general public.

Hindraker is not as smart as Trump. He nailed it on this. Tonight the convention was laser focused on America’s middle class. He is a classic of the middle class. He was an enlisted Marine and first in his family to go to college.
Then the Teamsters came out and gave the globalists and GOPe a solid body blow. The black community has flocked to Trump. 50 cent gave him a shout out.

Hindracker is badly out of touch. This ain’t the year for Chamber of Commerce, Globalism, Ukraine, exporting jobs, etc.

He needs to get with the program.

Some think the governor might appoint Ramaswamy, which wouldn’t be bad.

This is the line that caught my eye:

“I don’t think he makes a perceptible contribution to the ticket”

There was a podcast I think Dan Bongino’s, in which it was said the VP choice won’t help Trump much but could hurt him if it’s a bad one.

Vance won’t hurt the ticket.

As long as Vance “gets after it” he’ll be okay by me. Pence had more experience and proved to be a huge disappointment.

I think John H. Needs to look at JD and his future contribution to America. JD gets it and is in a great position to carry it forward.

My impression of Vance is that he is an academic and intellectual who entered politics at a young age. His selection as the VP candidate could be viewed as addressing a gap in the Trump team.

“had a number of much better choices available”
Name one.
Of the 5 top names bandied about by the media, I don’t think any of them were any better, they all had major weaknesses.
Trump sees something in Vance, I’ll go with his choice.

>> I respect Hinderaker and his take on this is concerning. What do you all think?

I frequent PowerLine Blog. I have a great deal of respect and alignment with Steve Hayward and Lloyd Billingsly. Johnson and Hinderaker, not so much, but they’re ok on most subjects.

Not all that long ago Hinderaker was a devout NeverTrumper, but as Trump ran away with the nomination he changed his tune; he’s not stupid. But like some former NeverTrumpers here on FR, although he has grudgingly switched over to backing Trump, he never misses an opportunity to second-guess everything Trump does.

In his July 9th piece (https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/07/trumps-vp-who-will-it-be.php) Hinderaker gives his take on who he thinks President Trump will pick for veep, and of course he also weighs in on who it *should* be in his opinion. I don’t agree with his preferences, but he supports his position and it’s neither vacuous nor impulsive.

Bottom line, to me Hinderaker is more of an asset than a liablity to the conservative cause.

And his wife is Indian (dot, not feather). Trump is bringing in people who have never been with us. No matter what the scribbler thinks, JD is the choice. Time to get on the team, sack up, and go in for the big win.

Enough sniveling.

I've been trying to figure out why some people seem to hate Vance here on FR. After reading this article, I'm still in the dark.

39 is not young, and he's been a national-level political figure for 8 years. His objections to Trump are many years in the past and show he is intelligently capable of changing his mind rather than doubling down mindlessly on his prejudices. So these are not serious objections Hinderaker is making. What's really up?

Senator Vance is a solid choice, likely more conservative on some issues than President. While I had hoped he'd remain in the Senate, I have no hesitation supporting a Trump & Vance ticket. If nothing else, he might offer some balance against the more liberal members of the Trump family. And aside from Gabbard, he was the only veteran under consideration.

Now I need to replace my Trump yard sign with a Trump/Vance yard sign.

So we lose a valuable Senate seat and he will probably be replaced by a dem.

Wrong. I’m not a DeWine fan, but he’s not going to appoint a dem. And Sherrod Brown is an aberration here in Ohio. Sherrod will likely retain. But Vance’s seat is pretty safely GOP. Ohio has no well-known bench that could take that seat. I guess maybe Kucinich, but I highly doubt it. JD’s gonna be good for us.

I think Powerline never fails to disappoint.

Think rationally: Rubio? the consummate RINO.
Scott, the man who was given opportunity zones, a tremendous opportunity for him as a politician, was treated with respect and damned Trump by standing aloof at every controversy, often sticking in the knife.
Bergum, a RINO worth 100M who brings nothing to the table and will alienate the base like OZ did.
Youngkin, praised by Rove & McCarthy and very popular among democrats.
Ben Carson, a very good man, honorable but low energy and not up to the task. The rest aren’t worth dissecting.

Vance is honest, willing to own up to mistakes, strong moral code, compelling life story, position statements are excellent and mesh perfectly with Trump’s MAGA platform. Very bright, quick on his feet, forthright, young and vigorous. An excellent complement to Trump.
If he performs well he can run as President and serve two terms. If heavens forbid there is an emergency he can step in with vigor and carry on..

Well said.
