First came the hippies, then the Marxists, then the Russians, then the Taliban. Monarchy was toppled by a palace coup within the royal family, I think. It’s recounted from experience in Khaled Housseini’s Kite Runner.
During the monarchy you can find pictures as to what life was like before its fall. Pictures of young students male & female at University of Kabul all stylishly dressed in a slightly modest modish 1960s European styles. You can find the same sort of pictures for Iran. The Western cowardice of letting the Islamic fundamentalist cat out of the bag really improved life in those countries. It now challenges the West not because its stronger but because its bolder! The West continues to respond with cowardice.

In the late 60s I was in the Peace Corps training to teach English in Afghanistan. (I was ‘deselected’ the day before the group left). Anyway Afghanistan had a king, Mohammed Zahir Shah, who like the Shah of Iran next door, was trying to westernize his nation. Women in Kabul could wear western style clothes, attend university and actually live to tell the tale. The king even outlawed honor killing of women.
Naturally he was opposed by all right-thinking Afghans, especially the mullahs in the countryside. There are films on YouTube showing life in Kabul in the 60s.
