The auditions for vice president continued on Saturday as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum found himself center stage at Donald Trump's Jersey Shore mega-rally.
Burgum is on the short list of candidates for vice president and got the full treatment on Saturday. He got to ride on Trump's campaign plane and spoke briefly at the rally.
During his speech, Trump praised Burgum, saying that "he probably knows more about energy than anybody I know."
He added cryptically: "So, get ready for something, okay? Just get ready."
Burgum ran for president and dropped out in December before the first nominating contests had been held. He has impressed people besides Trump with his depth of knowledge not only on energy issues but foreign policy as well.
But many political insiders raise an eyebrow at the thought of Burgum joining the ticket. His fellow North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer was "surprised" when the rumor mill churned out Burgum's name. He didn't see the advantage “because a white male from a state with three electoral votes that haven’t gone to a Democrat since LBJ does not seem to bring a lot of electoral value to the ticket.”
But Cramer thinks that Burgum has moved on to Trump's radar because of his passionate defense of the former president.
“Nobody has played their cards better since the primary,” said Scott Jennings, a former political adviser to President George W. Bush. “Trump is a casting director. Who looks more like a VP than Burgum?”
It's almost as if Burgum entered the presidential race to make a play for vice president. It's not unheard of, of course. He may have believed that even a failed run for the White House would raise his profile enough to be considered.

I certainly would not want to change your mind, Guen.
I guess this is all subjective, but I found him to be a surprisingly well rounded individual who brings many facets to help dear President Trump.
No hard feelings.
Regards
He brings nothing. It has to be a MAGA VP. Otherwise what is the point in voting in 2028? After 2018, I was content with no longer voting. Republicans let Obama take a sledgehammer to the country. Without Trump what is the point of voting? We need a Trump heir.
I think Bergum is a better choice than an insider politician like Rubio, JD Vance etc etc
Never again a Pence
Bergum is an outsider. Supposedly a billionaire.
But I’m still passionate about one person. Ben Carson
Big Vivek fan, but too many people don’t like him because...because...because.
He’d make terrific Secretary of State.
When was the last time a VP’s home state made a whiff of difference? That kind of thinking worked back in the days when a Southerner (LBJ) was needed to balance the Northerner (JFK). Clinton broke the conventions by picking Gore from Tennessee, and NOT to get Tennessee’s votes but to provide TEMPERAMENTAL balance. George the Younger picked Cheney NOT to get Wyoming’s THREE electoral votes, but to provide EXPERIENTIAL balance. McCain picked Palin for POLITICAL balance.
Biden picked Kamala Harris for INTERSECTIONAL balance. We shouldn’t play that game. We get burned whenever we do (Sandra Day O’Connor?).
Paul Ryan certainly did NOT deliver Wisconsin for Romney.
When Trump chose Pence, it wasn’t yet clear to many that for Pence, allegiance to the system’s corrupted rules superseded his official conservative positions. Those of us (including me) who were wary of a man who represented great opportunity and promise, but donated to Ted Kennedy and was awkward around the abortion issue as a former pro-abort, Pence at the time was a positive signal, a seat at the table.
Trump/Pence reminds me of the Biblical parable of the two sons, where the one who says “Yes, father” doesn’t do anything, and the one who doesn’t winds up doing the work. Trump did the work. That earns loyalty.
Some folks, including some black and Hispanic men, don’t mind that Trump doesn’t necessarily check race/sex boxes. If Trump picks a woman, some women will be offended if she’s pretty. Other women will buy any story that claims she’s an air-head. Bag it. Just pick the best future VP available, including the one who will be on page with Trump, perpetuate MAGA, and not try to upstage the head of the ticket.
NO ONE WHO WILL BETRAY PRESIDENT TRUMP.
Nice to have: a knowledgeable, trusted advisor to help Trump stock the Cabinet.
Also nice to have is someone who has the philosophical underpinnings to know what Trump knows by instinct.
I don’t know much about Burgum. I rather like JD Vance. But Burgum might be able to work better with Trump.
Burgum seems like a decent, competent, knowledgeable guy...but he’s a quiet personality that gets lost in the wash. Lots of positions he could probably do well, but broadly campaigning alongside a presidential candidate doesn’t seem to be one of them.
I don’t see his persona as off-putting, just not attractive. He’s there, says some interesting things once in a while, but appears to be nothing much more than an extra.
Rand’s been fully neutered.
Vivek is as Deep State as they come.
Trump’s infatuation with billionaires continues. Doesn’t need two on his ticket—especially a second old, white, male billionaire.
Good question. This Guy has the same one.
And, he looks like Dracula, which would create an annoying distraction.
VP or Energy Secretary? I'm going with Energy Secretary...
There are loads of other ways to get money to Trump’s campaign via various PACs.
If we’re to the point of selling the veep role to the highest bidder, that’s a sad situation indeed.
Boring. And as another poster said, he looks like Dracula.
I also have supported Burgum for VP, but when I saw that picture I wondered a bit, though I have not seen anything that would indicate he's nutty.
I'm hoping someone from ND can fill us in.
Vivek is the ONLY non-politician on the national stage that actually calls for EXACTLY what’s needed to MAGA: DISMANTLE THE UNCONSTITUTIONAL PORTION OF THE FEDERAL GOV’T.
Vivek for VP in 2024 so he can be the presumptive President in 2028 carrying MAGA for at least another eight years until 2036 when hopefully we have the right non-politician to carry America to full restoration of her Free Constitutional Republic.
We do need to take a closer look at him even though my first impression was positive.
Regards
He’s a good man. We already have the Dakotas sewed up. We need votes, whether it be in the black community, the female community or a swing state. This election will be very close and we need all the votes we can get to stop the fraud votes.
