Governor Kathy Hochul announced that a $2.3 billion tax-funded grant in redevelopment contracts for JFK International Airport has been awarded exclusively to minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBE).
MWBE stands for Minority/Women-Owned Business Enterprise. It’s a certification issued by the state that gives developmental benefits to businesses that are primarily owned and operated by a woman or a person who is at least 25% African American, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American. If the business is publicly traded, the stock must also be at least 51% minority-owned.
The move, which marks the largest participation of MWBE firms in any public-private partnership in New York’s history, has been praised by many for its focus on inclusivity.
However, some are questioning whether the DEI criteria could inadvertently sideline other considerations crucial to project success, such as experience, efficiency, and past performance

So you can take the cost estimate... Times it by 3 or 4, add a year or two to the completion date and viola... In a decade of so, JFK will be ‘renovated’.
It’ll be entertaining to hear the excuses and blame-shifting.

That estimate might be a shade optimistic. How many of these contracting companies will be infiltrated by mob run subcontractors who will likely steal millions.
Perfect storm.
Not to worry. As they fail to perform, the contracts will be reawarded to competent contractor at double or triple the cost while retaining the original DEI contractors.
Sounds like a clear civil rights violation.
Keep in mind that many firms claiming to be woman- or minority-owned have women and minorities at the top only as figureheads in order to secure plum contracts.
The extra year is just for the women contractor to decide on paint swatches

Well it is obviously one way to associate JFK with minorities for he certainly did not ever go to school with them. Nor his children or his grandchildren.
I know...I was asked. Told them to shove and ran my own business till I was in my late 70s. It was the right choice.
In the Atlanta metro area, they did this 20 years ago. Most of the businesses were shell companies that actually had zero experience.
They would just subcontract the work out to other firms that could do the work, skim some off the top for themselves, and go after the next contract.
The half of our species that can’t decide where to eat dinner, what movie to see, and takes an hour to decide what shoes to wear...
... and wants to be in charge of everything.
