Currently, mysterious widespread outages are occurring across the US, including the whole state of South Dakota and Nebraska, parts of Nevada, Texas, Iowa, Florida, Wisconsin, and Kentucky. Officials report major disruptions in 911 services, preventing emergency calls from getting through. The cause of this outage remains unknown at this time as officials are actively investigating. This situation is still developing with more outages occurring.

Looks to me like it was an internet/networking problem, which affected phone lines, including 911 service.

I’ve seen it reported both ways. One affected area was telling people to call on cellular, as landlines were affected.

I've called for various reasons over the years. Having called for such things as house and car fires and had the 911 dispatcher spend 30 minutes figuring out which jurisdiction to call, I just figure you might as well break out the hot dogs.

I've had much better responses just googling the local sheriff's office number.
