Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, starring alongside Tom Holland in "Romeo & Juliet," prompts The Jamie Lloyd Company to condemn racism and harassment in the industry.
Actress Francesca Amewudah-Rivers will play Juliet in the London West End production of "Romeo & Juliet." Because Rivers is the leading lady, she’s been the target of ongoing racist online bullying. This role as Juliet is Amewudah-Rivers’ West End debut, and what a warm welcome. Amewudah-Rivers is starring alongside “Spider-Man” leading man Tom Holland as Romeo.
The Jamie Lloyd Company released a statement: "Following the announcement of our Romeo & Juliet cast, there has been a barrage of deplorable racial abuse online directed towards a member of our company. This must stop. We are working with a remarkable group of artists. We insist that they are free to create work without facing online harassment."
The company continued, "We will continue to support and protect everyone in our company at all costs. Any abuse will not be tolerated and will be reported. Bullying and harassment have no place online, in our industry or in our wider communities."

Our subs stop nuclear attacks because they can retaliate... To turn this special task over to "people in charge based on sexual kink or color" is insane. Or intentional...
The important thing here is the ability to maintain the suspension of disbelief.
When dealing with homogeneous populations, it is irrational to stick someone into the mix that is clearly different from the group in fundamental ways.
An all black "Hamlet" is a reasonable interpretation of the idea, but a patchwork of "diversity" is just silly, especially when dealing with aristocratic families, such as in Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet.
Produced by Bialystock and Bloom.
It’s at Duke of York’s Theatre so who cares ,LOL
They need to get Whoopi Goldberg and Zach Roloff as “Romeo and Juliet”....
You hit the nail on the head, FRiend.
Spot on.
How did the woke Cleopatra movie do? I refused to watch it.
That.
Is.
Hilarious!
They did this on purpose. Interracial cast. The ugliest Juliet they could find. (Sorry, not sorry) The marketing department uses their army of spam bots to post “racist” comments. Free publicity for the movie. They do not care about the feelings of the actress, who does not deserve the criticism. But they don’t care.
Nice!
I mean.... i wouldn’t kill myself over her.
Romeo! Romeo! Wheyduhfukyouat? Romeo? Muthafu-ka!
I think maybe she left ugly behind and wanted to see how much farther she could.
I don’t care about the color of the actor/actress if the script is good, and acting is good. But for a romantic tragedy you should at least have moderately attractive people on the roles. She ain’t that!!
You’d have to find a fictional character that’s black and have a white actor post it. So far blacks are playing white fictional characters.
Oh Lordy.... 🤣😆
It’s being shown as a play in one building in London.
Ok just doing a shallow dive I can’t find any racist comments, just the REPORTS of racist comments.
Is this in the “Things That Never Happened” category? Because it kinda feels like it is.
The woman is not very attractive and the guy playing Romeo looks like a pure dweeb. Not a very likely star crossed couple. I will wonder if her family will be all black and if his family objects on those grounds.
All that said - big deal if Juliet is played by a woman with darker skin pigments? It takes place in Italy - you should see some of my relatives.
I wonder if we have any brave producer that can do this. It might be the only way to stop it.
Lefties ruin everything they touch.
She’s got a face like a ripped boot.
