The morning silence shattered as the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore met its unexpected fate, crumbling into the sea in a breathtaking cascade of steel and concrete. The collision, captured in a chilling livestream, unfolded with surreal intensity as a towering cargo ship collided with one of the bridge's support beams. Smoke billowed from the vessel, mingling with the chaos as emergency responders raced against time to rescue 20 people plunged into the icy waters below.

In the digital realm, the shocking footage spread like wildfire, triggering a wave of disbelief and concern across social media platforms. The Maryland Transportation Authority's urgent alert echoed through cyberspace, warning commuters to steer clear of the disaster-stricken area. Meanwhile, on the ground, Governor Wes Moore's declaration of a state of emergency underscored the gravity of the situation, mobilizing resources for a swift and coordinated response.

Do we have cops now on the boat? I can’t help it but immediately my mind goes to a 9/11 scenario. I assume contact with the ship was immediately established and this thought can be dismissed?

Under the COLREGS, I believe the bridge had the right of way.

Good to see Captain Hazelwood found work. As an instructor at the New York Maritime Academy. Might that have been one of his students, carrying on a proud tradition?

The first question that must be asked now is the role DEI may have played in these instances.

I am pretty sure that the Coast Guard has the entire surviving crew in custody, and has placed a Coast Guard prize crew onboard.

Some idiot ran a Greek cruise ship aground on Cape Cod about 20 years ago. The Boston Captain of Port removed all the officers and placed a Coast Guard Prize crew onboard. They lifted the ticket (license) of every officer on the ship.

I remember watching the bridge being built from my classroom in high school. Several miles away, but clearly visible. I used to drive over the bridge sometimes just for the pleasure of it. The view was spectacular.

This is going to cause major disruptions for the city for years to come. I now live on the other side of the city, and my daily routine will be significantly affected as even more traffic is routed onto the already overcrowded west side of the beltway, which has a major construction project going on right now

And then there’s the planned replacement of the triple bridges where I-70 comes into the beltway. That project will likely have to be put on hold until the new FSK bridge is open.

Given the woke nature of the state, I’m sure there will be plenty of delays, but one thing Maryland does right is road construction. Both the quality of our roads as well as the process of building and repairing them. Except for Baltimore City. In the city they have no idea what they’re doing.

Gravity indeed took hold.

Bridges are amazing feats of engineering, but they look very flimsy when they come crashing down.

A general dumbing down of society and lack of seriousness and pride in doing a job well.

Why be a good ship mechanic when you can be on American Idol or America’s Got Talent?

And part of the delay will be in deciding what to name it because I'm pretty sure Francis Scott Keys was a white guy who owned slaves. No way it remains named after him

Yeah I’m sure an Indonesia flagged ship worried about that. Everyone needs to calm down.
