CHICAGO (CBS) — Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard was sworn in Saturday as supervisor of Thornton Township.
She is the youngest person, first woman and first African American to hold that office.
She said she is truly “honored and humbled.”
“I can’t help but to pause and appreciate the historic significance of this appointment,” she said.
But Henyard’s first year as Doton mayor has been difficult.

An effort in Dolton, Illinois, to recall Mayor Tiffany Henyard was initiated in April 2022. Members of the Dolton Village Board voted to place two referendums on the ballot for the election on June 28, 2022. The referendums would have enabled the recall of Henyard.[1][2] Both referendum passed on election night, but results were found invalid by judicial rulings.[3][4]

Henyard has been the subject of some past controversy. Last month, she gave away gas for free at a Food 4 Less in Dolton in what was billed as kicking off her mayoral campaign. Some legal experts told CBS 2 Political Investigator Dana Kozlov at the time that if the gas giveaway didn’t cross the legal line, it definitely stood right on it.
A spokesperson for Henyard said at the time that the gas giveaway was not an attempt to buy votes.

The Dolton Board has expressed concerns in recent months regarding Henyard’s “security detail,” House said, adding the board had asked multiple times for the Mayor to justify her need for such security. The lack of adequate explanation for the security that is likely funded by Dolton taxpayers is the reason for the lawsuit, House said, adding the complaint was filed in January.
During a discussion about the security topic in October, Mayor Henyard said at a Board meeting, “I’m a single mom with a two-year-old daughter, for you to even think about removing something like that from myself that’s given to everyone in the nation — as it relates to when you’re in politics — it comes with the title. It ain’t nothing I just made up.”
