Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Ukraine ping

ftrpilot: [Eight more Patriot batteries and the Kinzahl & Iskander shoot down rate will climb dramatically.

One or two of these batteries need to be colocated with the F-16s.]

If you had your druthers, would you prioritize protecting cities or push a couple close enough to the front lines to make further MiG-34 glide bomb attacks a suicide mission? My impression is that whatever battlefield momentum Russia has generated recently was driven by these glide bomb attacks. In turn, Ukrainian glide bomb attacks in the vicinity of Belgorod could reverse the direction of that momentum. And the Ukrainian strike missions might have been driven by a newly-found caution on the part of Russian interceptor units. Is it conceivable that Ukraine could get even limited air superiority in its own airspace - over terrain it currently controls - with the help of a couple of Patriot batteries?

All fighter aircraft, especially the F-16s, must be protected. Patriots may not be required.

Hardened shelters, underground bunkers, vertical dispersal, horizontal dispersal and decoys can all be used to help protect the aircraft.

If I were in charge, I would want a briefing on the plan to protect the aircraft.

In my day, we called it "Survive to Operate".

The Su-34 glide bomb attacks need to be stopped. Patriots are necessary to get this done.

The Patriot launch vehicles will have to be forward deployed.

The control vans & radars can remain outside the range of artillery, rockets, and FPV drones. However, cruise missiles, shaheds, iskanders and kinzhals remain a threat.

Is it conceivable that Ukraine could get even limited air superiority in its own airspace - over terrain it currently controls - with the help of a couple of Patriot batteries?

Absolutely.

The US should provide a large number of unrestorable f-16s that are sitting in the boneyard in Tucson. They would be great decoys, and provide some spare parts.

Excellent idea.

I also think we should throw in some tugs so these decoys can “taxi” to different parking spots.

Trump seemed confident last night, that he would have strong leverage over Putin, to impose a deal if elected. Russia’s Strategic position seems precarious, as their Military resources dwindle, and the West is formally solidifying behind Ukraine, for a ten year commitment. Russia needs a way out of Putin’s deepening mess.

Radio Free Europe reports:

EU Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine with New Security Agreement

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on June 27 signed security agreements with the European Union, Estonia, and Lithuania (the 18th and 19th Nations to do so, including all members of the G-7) at the start of a two-day EU summit in Brussels.

The security deal with the European Union reinforces the bloc’s support for Kyiv in nine areas of security and defense policy.

A draft of the agreement obtained by RFE/RL reiterates the “resolute condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine” and reaffirms the EU’s “unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Kyiv’s right to self-defense against the Russian aggression, and its pursuit of a just peace.

The draft says that the EU supports Ukraine’s reforms and EU accession path, noting that overall EU assistance to Ukraine amounts to almost 100 billion euros ($107 billion), including 35 billion euros in military support.

“The European Union is determined to continue providing Ukraine and its people all the necessary political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support for as long as it takes and as intensely as needed,” the document says.

The draft stresses that “Russia must not prevail” in its full-scale war launched in February 2022 and says Ukraine must get back territory annexed by Moscow. It also lists commitments to providing military equipment, military training, and cooperation between the European and the Ukrainian defense industries.

The agreements Zelenskiy signed with Lithuania and Estonia while at the EU summit are intended to complement other similar agreements sealed between Ukraine and its allies. They are not mutual defense pacts but do amount to pledges to provide Ukraine with weapons and other aid and deter any future invasion.”

Kyiv Independent reports:

“Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed on June 27 that Tver Oblast came under drone attack overnight, hours after Russian Telegram channels claimed a major chemical research plant in the region had been targeted.

Images and videos shared by local residents on Russian Telegram channels appeared to show a large explosion, purportedly in the area of the Redkinsky Experimental Plant.

The Redkinsky plant is located around 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Moscow, and over 500 kilometers (315 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

The Redkinsky plant is an experimental facility that produces chemicals primarily for the aviation and space industries, such as chemicals that make up fuel.

According to its website, the plant is “one of the largest chemical production facilities in Tver Oblast,” with 700 employees, and “has an advantageous geographical location close to the railway and Moscow-St. Petersburg highway.”

“The plant has been focused on conducting experimental work in the field of chemical industry since the early 1950s,” the plant website says...

...The situation in Konakovsky district is “under control,” (Tver Oblast Governor Igor) Rudenya claimed, adding that there were no casualties and emergency services were at the scene.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the attack was thwarted, and four drones were downed over Tver Oblast, two were downed over Moscow Oblast, and one drone was downed over Belgorod Oblast.”

Newest Russian S-500 intercepts (literally) ATACMS cluster missiles

Source: Tivaz Artillery "The ATACMS cassette (cluster Warhead) has arrived on Ebal Radar from S-500."

(Possibly the 76T6/77T6 ABM Engagement Active Phased Array Rada used for tracking high-speed ballistic targets like... ATACMS)

Crimean Wind and other UA sources are reporting the possible destruction of a new Russian S-500 Prometheus air defense system near the Dzhankoi Air Field in occupied Crimea.

NASA FIRMS thermal imagery shows a fire at the presumed location of the MGM-140 ATACMS M39A1 Block I missile strike which was acquired at 1300 Kyiv Time (1000 UTC) on June 28, 2024 (today).

Possible Geolocation: 45.680718, 34.423126

https://x.com/UKikaski/status/1806687112521224339

45.680718, 34.423126 on Google Maps

This is being reported all over x.com.

I believe Ukraine MoD is the source for all of the blog posts.

I am still skeptical, however FIRMs data is promising.

The name S-500 is bogus...it should be SA-2 V5.

Where did you get the SA-2 V5 NATO designation?

The SA2 system (Russian: С-75) was a Soviet era system: NATO SA-2 Guideline. We used to dread these things when the turned on their radars as they all had the V760 missile with nuclear warheads.

The Russians call the system: C-500 Прометей (S-500 Prometheus). Only one battalion made, according to the Wiki entry.

I read that russia has retained the same basic "architecture" from the SA-2 through the S-500.

We still call ours "Patriot", so I thought russia should still call their SA-2 followed by a version number.

…And Czechia makes 20.

Kyiv Independent reports:

“Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced on X that the country will sign a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine during the European Political Community summit in London on July 18.

Fiala said on June 28 that he had reached on agreement with President Volodymyr Zelensky the previous day to “conclude negotiations on the text of the Czech-Ukrainian security agreement before the (9-11 July) NATO summit in Washington.”…

…Czechia joins 19 other countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Germany, and France, as well as the European Union, that have signed similar bilateral treaties to help Kyiv repel Russia’s aggression. The agreements are based on a pledge made by the Group of Seven (G7) last July.

Under this plan, individual countries would provide bilateral support to help Kyiv repel the ongoing Russian invasion and deter any future aggression.

The security guarantees would entail explicit and long-lasting obligations, as well as bolster Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression. The guarantees would also cover sanctions, financial aid, and post-war reconstruction…

…The newly-elected U.K. Prime Minister will host 50 leaders from across Europe during the European Political Community summit (18 July) which will primarily focus on supporting Ukraine against ongoing Russian aggression.”

I would imagine that Israelis needs are more towards the ballistic missile threat which as I understand it the pac-3 missiles are better at. Does the basic system need to be changed to handle pac-3 and that would be why they are retiring these systems, or as you said already they have something better than patriot to replace them with?

Regardless Ukraine needs both capabilities desperately. Long range anti aircraft capabilities to push back/destroy Russian aircraft launching cruise missiles and glide bombs, and anti ballistic missile defense.

Pretty sure Ukraine won’t be picky

Hopefully Israel has a nice stockpile of AD missiles of any kind

Their SA systems seem quite adept at “literally “ intercepting atacms.

Wonder what the status of R&D teams on these “great” interceptors is?

Just add another Soviet er ah Russian potential military export possibility going up in flames

Theoretical or advertised capabilities meet reality.

Question, how long does it take to reload an SA after firing, and breakdown move and set up after moving and compared that to a patriot system

Yes they retained the radar, tel, rocket and vehicle concepts, other than that its all different. Always good not to make up nomenclature. Especially when a simple search would show the correct terms.

SA-2 is the S-75 “Desna” / V-750, NATO reporting name: “Guideline”
S-500 is called “Prometheus” or 55R6M “Triumfator-M”
MIM-104 is called “Patriot”.

Calling the S500 “S2’’ is like calling an M2A3 Abrams tank “Sherman V9”

The Israeli Iron Dome is arguably better than the US Patriot, particularity when coupled with David’s Sling and Arrow systems.

The 8 Israeli MIM-104D Patriot (PAC-2/GEM+) Patriots systems were retired for a reason. Last use was in 2018.

From what I have seen the iron dome uses smaller missiles and lots of them to defeat crude humus rockets …. Does it have an anti ballistic missile capability and what is its range

Also what is the capability of the David system, btw love the name

My 61 willys is old and obsolete but it still gets me from a-b(just a lot slower and tougher of a ride)

I am sure the Ukrainians would love to take Israel’s “scrap “ lol

Russian’s New Combat Icebreaker Starts Sea Trials
Armed with a [75mm] gun and the capacity to carry [Kalibr] cruise missiles, the Ivan Papanin is designed to break ice and launch kinetic attacks.
https://www.twz.com/news-features/russians-new-combat-icebreaker-starts-sea-trials

Medium breaker - ice at speed: 5.5 feet maximum

Meanwhile, the post office’s, er the coast guard’s, um homeland security’s 3 bi-polar, committee-designed future breakers are held up until at least 2028 due to compromises, red tape, and ever growing design changes.

Still more meanwhile, Russia continues to churn out 7 nuclear powered monster heavy ice breakers (Project 22220) that can do 2 knots through 9 feet of ice. With crew perks like a sauna, squash court, etc.

Crew perks on the only US heavy breaker the Polar Star include lots of duct tape and bailing wire for everyday use.

Ukraine May Have Lost An M270 MLRS For The First Time
The M270s have been a bane to Russian war efforts and were reportedly involved in a recent deadly ballistic missile strike on Crimea.
https://www.twz.com/land/ukraine-may-have-lost-an-m270-mlrs-for-the-first-time

Russian Forces seem to have successfully hit a Ukrainian M270/MARS II FARP(Forward Arming and Refuelling Point).

The fires indicate possible fuel and missile reserves being stored there, as for once, we saw the MLRS drive into the facility.

However the aftermath is again bad.

PIF: "The Israeli Iron Dome is arguably better than the US Patriot"

I don't think that is a fair comparison.

They are different systems with different missions.

Iron Dome is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 to 70 km away. Patriot is not an anti-artillery system.

I believe Israel retired their Patriot systems because David's Sling & Arrow systems are fully operational and they have enough to cover all of Israel.

David's Sling, newer and better than Patriot Pac-2 GEM+, is replacing their Patriots. Also, it is expensive to operate & maintain 2 systems.

Patriot Pac-2 GEM+ does have a capability against ballistic missiles, just not as good as Pac-3.

Israel's Patriots will be a welcome addition to Ukraine's defensive arsenal.
