I read that russia has retained the same basic "architecture" from the SA-2 through the S-500.

We still call ours "Patriot", so I thought russia should still call their SA-2 followed by a version number.

Yes they retained the radar, tel, rocket and vehicle concepts, other than that its all different. Always good not to make up nomenclature. Especially when a simple search would show the correct terms.

SA-2 is the S-75 “Desna” / V-750, NATO reporting name: “Guideline”
S-500 is called “Prometheus” or 55R6M “Triumfator-M”
MIM-104 is called “Patriot”.

Calling the S500 “S2’’ is like calling an M2A3 Abrams tank “Sherman V9”
