Trump on Ukraine
Hot Air ^ | February 2, 2024 | David Strom

Well, this was a bit unexpected, given what Trump supporters have been implying about what Trump’s Ukraine policy would be.

Far from cutting off funds or ending the war (the latter of which Trump has indeed promised), Trump, at a rally, told the audience that the US has been bearing a disproportionate portion of the cost and he would pressure European governments to increase their own contributions to the same level as the United States.

Given that this is Trump, I wouldn’t call this an iron-clad-take-it-to-the-bank promise to keep pouring billions of dollars into Ukraine’s war coffers, but it does suggest that the view that both Trump supporters and his opponents have of him are grossly oversimplified.

The Left keeps talking as if Trump would have handed Ukraine over to Putin, even though Putin invaded Ukraine twice now–under Obama and then Biden. He left the country alone when Trump was president, and Trump was the only president who sent Ukraine arms until the 2nd war began.

Trump’s supporters tend to oppose funding Ukraine, but Trump here suggests that his problem with funding Ukraine is that only the US is doing so, with small token contributions from European states. As with NATO–an organization he criticized but kept funding–he talks very tough to the Europeans but shows no signs of abandoning American commitments.

Well that's a surprise! Trump's plan would actually INCREASE support to Ukraine by forcing NATO members to step up and match the U.S. contributions.

I actually agree with this position.

Many head's exploding this morning!

Trump is just smart enough to know NATO will force a peace agreement, any peace agreement, before they spend more money on Uke.

I am among Trump’s biggest supporters here on FR, but if there’s a chance in hell that he would let the U.S. taxpayer continue to subsidize Ukraine’s civilian functions and fund pensions for the people in that dump, then even I won’t vote for him.

It’s simple for me. If TRUMP, felt he needed more funding to handle Ukraine I’d be much more positive about it because I know his intentions. He’d use it not to prolong the war but to resolve it. Trump won’t ask for 100b for Ukraine while saying the border just cant be secured. That is just one example but it’s sumed up nicely by saying he’s America First.

Also a plus.....Trump didnt mention greedy, money-grubber Zelensky in the deal.

ROFLOL

Think about it people. How are you going to get the Russians and Putin to the negotiating table to end the war they started. Talking nice to them? Trump is setting up the great of massive funding, and you can bet massive air power transfer, so that Putin and the Kremlin will be more likely to end the war.

Biden wants perpetual war, watching Ukrainian and Russians die, as long as the US weapon manufacturers are satisfied. Trump says he wants to end the war, he gets how to do that.

This is quite consistent with Trump’s position ever since the invasion. It comes as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. He has given an interview saying he told Putin there would be “hell to pay” if he invaded Ukraine.

Trump’s latest is very disappointing to me.

I take it that he now supports endless war in Ukraine, or at a minimum he is waffling on getting us out of there.

And bragging about how much we have donated to NATO is not clear and direct either.

This election is getting uglier by the day.

How’s our big, beautiful wall that Mexico paid for doing?

Trump is just a trash talking politician, and you chumps eat it up like he’s the Messiah.
No wall, lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and trillions in government spending.
He’s better than Biden, BFD.

Is the Ukraine war our war? No, hell no.

Should we be supporting Uke Nazi’s? No, absolutely not.

But, is Russia a potential enemy? That is a probability. The probability is that the globalists have made them an enemy, and like any cornered rat will come out fighting.

I’m thinking Trump has deeper insight on what’s going on and simply would not just pull the plug on the Uke’s. He realizes this is a Euro war and those pinheads need to pony up and pay their fair share.

The Afghan pullout was a complete disaster. I do not think Trump wants to be in the same boat the Biden regime is on regarding ending a war.

And the Uke’s need to be purged of their Nazi elements.

NATO countries should pay their fair share! Stop the presses! From Day One this has been a central tenet of MAGA! At some point I’m sure you flirted with the MAGA and America First fads. Surely you remember. Give us the direct quote where Trump says anything about funding the proxy war. You’ve got to find better material.

“Trump, at a rally, told the audience that the US has been bearing a disproportionate portion of the cost and he would pressure European governments to increase their own contributions to the same level as the United States.”

The article takes this statement from any Trump speech since 2015 and it’s off to the races.

Then you have no political “home” at all.
That is the fate of every one-issue advocate.

May I interest you in my political party?
That would be the Carlist International Revolutionary Front, in English, or the Carlist International in short. FRIC in Spanish.

I do need to finish the manifesto though.

Agree with circlecity that it is much more a feint to shock NATO into a full-fledged TrumpII Summit, maybe in Orban's Hungary or perhaps Poland for the optics.

"We're watching a holocaust. We're watching something that I've never seen before. [Russia] is blowing up buildings, with children, with women, with professionals, with people, just people, they're blowing up indiscriminately. They're just shooting massive missiles and rockets into these buildings and everybody is dying."

"The numbers are far worse than what you're seeing on television. I don't know if they [are] keeping them down. When you see buildings being blown up and then they say one person died? Give me a break. Many people are dying and we're allowing this to happen."

"They have to stop it and they have to stop it now, but they don't respect the United States, and the United States is not doing anything about it. This is a holocaust, this is a horrible thing that's happening and you see it on television every night."

Then you will be happy to know that Europe has, in fact, borne a substantially higher burden than the US in supporting Ukraine. The US has given more in armaments, but Europe has given more cash.

War will be over and hohostan/ucrayon will be history by June or July. Nobody will remember anything about it by November.

Demographics dictates all other issues.
You are correct, I have nowhere now.
The country I grew up in is dead.

The dollar goes pretty far in Spain and Portugal.
I hear there are white people in Spain, by France, that speak some odd language.
Maybe I will go there.

Mexico did its part during the Trump admin by blocking their border with Guatemala and stopping the organized “convoys”. As well as accepting back across the border asylum seekers, even of they weren’t Mexican.

Trump had a good relationship with AMLO, after the first few months, against all expectations.
