Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

An oil depot was attacked in Volgograd. This is the third strike on such objects over the past two weeks.

Last night, was attacked the LUKOIL-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery by enemy drones. According to our information, one of the drones hit a large oil storage tank. This is what led to a large-scale fire that took several hours to put out.

However, there was a second drone, which, unfortunately, also flew to the oil depot. He damaged the pumping station. Our interlocutors note that the work of the oil depot will be paralyzed for some time.

Perhaps we are even talking about weeks, but it is still difficult to make any forecasts on the recovery time frame. There is no information about dead or injured yet; sources say that two employees of the oil depot are still considered missing.

This creates problems for our army, because the Lukoil oil depot in Volgograd was used to supply fuel to our military in the Northern Military District zone and beyond.

In general, this is not the first attack on oil refining-related facilities. Two weeks ago, a drone attacked a gas terminal in Ust-Luga, Leningrad region. A week ago, the Tuapse oil refinery came under attack.

The alarming thing is that Ukrainian drones, alas, reach their targets. And they fly further and further from the combat zone. It is also obvious that they have changed tactics and are striking specifically at oil refining facilities. Unfortunately, air defense systems do not always cope with such attacks.

The President wanted to go out to the wives of those mobilized during the action in Moscow

On Saturday, February 3, in the Alexander Garden in Moscow at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a rally is planned for the wives of mobilized SVO participants. It is timed to coincide with the 500th day since the announcement of mobilization in our country.

The president was informed about the upcoming action the day before. Unexpectedly for everyone, Vladimir Vladimirovich accepted the idea with admiration. “This is what is needed,” said the head of state.

Let us remind you that there are discussions in the authorities about demobilization. Vladimir Putin wants to carry out partial demobilization before the elections and send home at least 10 thousand military personnel, but the generals led by Sergei Shoigu are against it.

The President does not want to aggravate relations with the generals, but demobilization should become an important point in Vladimir Vladimirovich’s election campaign.

The President has previously said that he wants to hear support from ordinary people regarding demobilization. Including the wives of mobilized women who perform tasks in the Northwestern Military District zone. He believes that such actions will provide important arguments for dialogue with the military.

Vladimir Putin even expressed a desire to go out to the wives of those mobilized at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, but political strategists led by Sergei Kiriyenko opposed it.

In Volgograd, Russia, drones attacked Lukoil's largest refinery in the Southern Federal District, with a capacity of 14.8 million tons.

The regional governor and the Russian Defense Ministry claim that the UAVs were shot down and debris fell on the plant.

Looking at the location in Volgograd, most or all of the petroleum products are not exported. This should impact military supplies destined for Ukraine.

“Ukrainian drones attacked a Lukoil oil refinery”

Going after refineries, and refined products export facilities, rather than crude oil production and crude oil export facilities, is a good call.

It hurts Russian revenues more, has little effect on global oil prices, and will impact price and availability of the products that people need to use within Russia (like gasoline, diesel and heating fuel) more.

Refined products have much higher profit margins than crude, and accounted for the majority of total Russian oil-related profits.

Russia has 44 mega refineries. Those 44 targets have an outsized impact on Russia’s economy and Government revenues.

IMHO, the generals are correct.

A partial demobilization would destroy morale for those not selected.

It will be interesting to see if putin gets his way.

Here's some videos from the protest.

Russia has 44 mega refineries.

Allocating surface-to-air assets to defend all of these "targets" is impossible.

It appears that Ukraine target intel is getting real-time information on where the S-400s are located.

Gasoline shortages will surely follow.

Russian people will feel the impact of the war.

⚡️🇨🇦 Canada may transfer CRV7 air-to-surface missiles to 🇺🇦 Ukraine, which it planned to dispose of.

CBC writes about it.

It is noted that the CRV7 air-to-surface missiles of 70 mm caliber are designed to strike ground targets. They were developed in the 1980s and were decommissioned in the early 2000s.

Shipping them to Ukraine would be easy and a cost effective way to put them to good use.

In the Russian city of Engelsk, the commander of the Tu-95 strategic bomber, Major Oleg Sergeevich Stegachyov, WAS SHOT.

He is directly involved in launching missile attacks on civilian objects in Ukraine and killing people.

❗️| As a result of the attack, Oleg Stegachyov suffered gunshot wounds. Whether he survived or not - we will clarify.

Apparently, he was shot as he exited his car.

He is a victim of the internet. He probably published his own picture on his FB page.

Going after refineries, and refined products export facilities, rather than crude oil production and crude oil export facilities, is a good call.

I saw reports that Ukraine was warned after the attack on Novorossiysk. Further attacks had the potential to disrupt the oil market. So Ukraine is again forced to defend their country within the limits imposed by third parties whom they depend on for support. So now they attack targets that have few effects outside Russia, like the refineries. Refineries are complex and vulnerable. In the USA, when a refinery is damaged, workers are flown in, and stay onsite for months for repairs. If many refineries are damaged, there might not be enough people with requisite skill to repair them promptly. Western petro companies pulling out has likely already greatly reduced Russia's ability to maintain these plants. Maybe Ukraine should be sending the remaining crews some special treats...

[ Ukrainians Conduct a Successful Counter Attack. Russian Gains Reduced to Zero ]

==
Day 709: Feb 02

Today, there are a lot of updates about the battle near Vuhledar.

But first of all, more information became available about the combined strike on Crimea. Russian sources reported that Ukrainians tricked the Russian air defense system by first launching decoy rockets. Once the Russian air defense started shooting them down and revealed their positions, Ukrainians launched anti-radar HARM rockets.

These rockets are designed to pick up signals from working radars and destroy them, so Russians basically had to either switch the radars off or take a risk and try to intercept these rockets before they destroy the radars.

For Ukrainians, it did not matter what Russians decided to do - the air defense was busy, creating a perfect opportunity to launch Storm Shadow missiles.

Ukrainian Air Force Spokesman stated that based on the eulogies of Russian soldiers and other reports, at least 3 aircraft and 2 facilities with personnel were destroyed, including Russian General Oleksandr Tatarenko. Moreover, Ukrainians conducted a simultaneous marine drone strike on the Russian Fleet.

As a result, 3 drones successfully hit a Russian missile carrier, which promptly went to the bottom of the sea. Such a massive and successful combined strike caused huge discontent in the Russian media space.

Russian analysts criticized the overpraised S-400 air defense systems that were supposed to create an Iron Dome above Crimea and the continuous failure to protect the radars as well as military objects.

Another point of concern for the Russian analysts became the disastrous Russian offensive operation near Vuhledar. Vuhledar became notorious a long time ago, because multiple Russian brigades were completely annihilated here, achieving zero territorial gains.

In the most recent offensive operation, Russian forces tried to implement a new plan and bypass Vuhledar from the north. In order to achieve this goal, the main target became Novomykhailivka.

The operation started from demining the fields and attacking Ukrainian strongpoints around the settlement. At first, Russian forces managed to achieve some success on the southern flank, and the main reason for such a big jump was the lack of strongpoints.

As you can see, there is a small river going through the settlements, creating several lines of swamps between the fields. Ukrainians had a series of small unit-size defenses in the tree lines, however, the main defense belt was located right in front of the village - more precisely, 2 farms, a cemetery, and main road intersections.

By leveraging 3 settlements under their control, Russian forces were launching one mechanized attack after another from all sides, forcing Ukrainians to withdraw to the main defense belt. Russian sources reported that the battle for Novomykhailivka had started as Russians reached the outskirts.

Since Russian forces on the northern flank were substantially lagging behind, the only way to collapse Ukrainian defense was by penetrating the settlement from the south and cutting off supplies.

Geolocated footage showed that Russians managed to take control of several strongpoints and get a foothold, and started preparing to storm the settlement.

Despite devastating shelling and the use of heavy thermobaric systems, Russians failed to undermine the Ukrainian defense, and Russian forces on the outskirts were slowly killed.

Once the garrison was liquidated, Ukrainian fighters from the 79th AirMobile Brigade conducted a powerful second wave of counterattacks and pushed the front line back by more than 2 kilometers, forcing Russians to start the whole operation from scratch.

The only positions that Russians managed to maintain were south of the swamp. Russian forces decided to leverage the natural obstacle in the form of the swamp as a shield against possible Ukrainian flank attacks and expand westward.

Russians created a powerful assault unit consisting of 4 tanks, 10 armored fighting vehicles, and around 150 soldiers and launched an attack. Unfortunately for Russians, Ukrainians ambushed the column with drones.

Geolocated footage shows that Russian forces sustained about a company’s worth of heavy armored vehicle losses during assaults in the area. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that only in this attack Russian forces lost 2 tanks and 7 armored fighting vehicles.

The disastrous operations in the south led to harsh criticisms of the Russian military command for failing to account for the drone factor when planning tactical assaults.

Other analysts noted that Ukrainian minefields are canalizing Russian routes, however, they still claimed that consistent high equipment losses show the ineptitude of the Russian military command.

Reporting From Ukraine will be on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

ETCM: "Maybe Ukraine should be sending the remaining crews some special treats..."

I believe that will happen.

Does ruzzia have sufficient surface-to-air assets to protect the repair workers?

Successful attacks on work-in-progress could have a more detrimental effect than the original attack.

Based on satellite imagery, it appears the strike where the General was killed was a major IADS command center. In post 189, I pointed out the 96L6 radar, but satellite images from October also show 2x 5XH6U early warning radars, 6 transportable command center modules, and a Pantsir S2 Battery to protect them. Based on the configuration, and the presence of Lt General Tatarenko, it was a pretty important installation.

Considering Ukraine’s minimal, cobbled together SEAD/DEAD capability, they are having pretty impressive success. Russia’s IADS would not fare well against a peer/superior force.
