Two takeaways: McCarthy is nothing but a power hungry opportunist and he's clearly reading the tea leaves as "Trump is getting the nomination, its inevitable" and he wants to align himself with the winner early so he gets brownie points.
And second: if Trump hires this guy in any capacity it will show me that he's learned nothing from all of his bad appointments in his first term.

McCarthy has the support of major GOP donors in California. The right cabinet position in a Trump administration would be one that serves the interests of those donors.

It will be a thankless job following Pete Buttigieg, he can only go up from his predecessor, and he's from California. Maybe that would help when dealing with the Los Angeles ports.
