More like 12 mpg, but even with the extra gasoline, he had a much better driving experience if than if he had a couple of fuel efficient cars from the mid-70s (Ford Pinto? Chevy Vega? Toyota Corona?).Those cars would have gotten 25 mpg real life, so let's say he would have used 10,000 gallons of gasoline, plus the cost of two new crap cars in 1973-~1988 ($10,000) and an average gasoline price of a dollar a gallon over the range (probably high). So he spent $15,000 extra without financing to have a car big enough to haul a family or stuff, and have a great ride, comparative luxury, and power.

The scrapyard has to purchase the vehicle with transfer of title. I'm guessing the scrapyard purchased the Impala but recognizing the value, saved it from the shredder.

If it is a case of theft, the boyfriend should be able to get his car back.

In her defense, it was a Chevy. Easy car to hot wire as it didn’t even have a locking hood or locking steering. And I have to assume that she did steal it is no self-respecting man would EVER let his girl have access to the keys of a classic.
