Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie worked to cast himself in a different light from other Republicans on entitlement program policy in the hunt for the GOP presidential nomination.
Mr. Christie suggested that “political risk” was needed to make changes to entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare at conservative radio host Erick Erickson’s conference, which featured other presidential hopefuls, in Atlanta on Saturday.
Mr. Christie, who is polling in sixth place according to national Republican presidential primary polling data, said that changes are needed in Social Security and Medicare because the programs are quickly running out of money.
He called lawmakers in Congress “liars and cowards” for not wanting to make changes to the entitlement programs.
“They know that in 10 years, Medicare will be bankrupt.” Mr. Christie said. “And in 11 years, Social Security will be bankrupt.”
The Congressional Budget Office projected in a report last year that the Social Security program’s trust fund “would be exhausted” by 2033.

How profound.
All part of the plan. Now we need a new plan. Once my reparations kick in, I should be good for a few years.
There are no special ‘lockboxes’ for these programs. It's all ‘funded’ from the general revenue - which we know is overspent by billions every year. Actually, the federal budget deficit was recently $1.4 trillion from October through June.
But Christie wants to concentrate on two programs that those who have worked their whole lives have been counting on.
Just another clueless politician.
Social Security is not an “entitlement”. It’s a Ponzi scheme!
There are a lot of programs that better get the axe before they even think about SS.
Cut the fat ...so to speak.
Agree!
Did you catch my Christe jab ..?
cut the FAT ..... I thought that was pretty good.
not my best but hey
when your Freepin after dark it gets hazy and crazy sometimes.
I’m in grouchy old man mode ........... so .....
get off my lawn
I DID catch it. I thought it was masterful..
He shouldn’t touch Medicare, judging by his size, he’s going to need it sooner than he thinks.
We should be reforming SSDI and SSI immensely. Both are severely abused and amount to at least 25% or more of SS expenditures. SSDI comes completely out of SS funds and SSA administers SSI which is paid from the general fund.
As it is now, SSDI is used mostly as an early SS retirment and SSI is nothing more than federal welfare.
It’s a defined benefit plan with a little bit of defined contribution thrown in.
Prediction: One day soon we will see Democrats work to give SS benefits (retroactively) to illegals who have been here working under the table.
perfect
Not a winning platform.
Combine NeoCon wars with entitlement cuts, Amnesty, some more “free Trade” deals, mass H1B’s, carbon taxes, and pretty soon you’ve got a platform that the One Percent can really get behind.
Yes, uniparty.
