Donald Trump: ‘I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15’
Emily Posts News ^ | 03/27/2023 | Emily Miller

UPDATE: I did not know about the Nashville school shooting until after I sent out this story. I did not intend to make a political statement of any kind about the victims from the Covenant School. I pray for the families and the school.

As president, Donald Trump privately pushed for banning AR-15-type rifles, according to a new report. Trump was — and is — a big defender of Second Amendment rights. So the new revelation is surprising that he tried to renew the “assault weapon” ban during his first two years in office.

The news about Trump is buried in a lengthy story in The Washington Post on Monday about AR-15 style rifles. The report says he tried multiple times in 2018 and 2019 to get support for a federal “assault-weapon” ban.

The AR-15 is a style of rifle. The FBI crime statistics for 2021 show there were 11,628 people killed by guns, and 447 of them were by rifles of any type. The bureau does not track the style of the rifle.

A spokesman for Trump, who is running for reelection in 2024, did not deny the remarks. From The Post:

Trump’s bipartisan gun control

While this reporting from The Post is from anonymous sources, it lines up with Trump’s public comment in 2018 in a bipartisan White House meeting on gun control measures after the horrific school mass shooting in Parkland, FL.

Trump told Sen. Dianne Feinstein in a live TV meeting that he would look at her “assault weapon” ban bill. It caused an uproar with the pro-gun groups that helped get him elected. I cued up this video to watch him tell her:

NRA protest

The Post reported this meeting and one other in more detail:

Trump supported the NRA in the same 2018 meeting with Feinstein and others (transcript here):

The not agreeing on everything is a reference to the issue of raising the federal minimum age for owning a gun from 18 to 21 years old.

Trump was POTUS 4 years and never moved to take away guns. Now Joe Biden is planning on doing that for sure.

Re: 79 - see https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yxgybgEKHHI

President Trump was clear at that time on gun removal.

So sickening to see the Washington Post ANONYMOUS sources to attack a President who has NOT banned any guns. And then those who LIE and say he did. Bump stocks are not guns and the ban is pretty much meaningless and anyone familiar with guns know it.

From the Left:

Sidebar: What Has Trump Done on Guns? A Lot.

Excerpt:
President Trump hasn’t just failed to strengthen America’s gun laws in the wake of repeated mass shootings, he’s systematically gutted existing laws in ways that make kids and communities less safe:

From the right:

A Second Amendment Grade for President Trump So Far
Topics: Second Amendment
Sponsors: Federalism & Separation of Powers Practice Group

Final Assessment? More Good Than Bad.

In his first term, President Trump largely lived up to his promise to protect Americans’ Second Amendment rights. There have been a few missteps along the way, but on the whole, the Trump Administration has kept its word when it comes to our right to keep and bear arms.

The attack could have been every bit as successful by making swords out of old truck leaf springs from the junk yard, and using sledge hammer handles for the sword handles.

Like I said, we already have 4 years of history to look at. Whatever grade you give him for his first term, A, B, or whatever, it’s likely to be more of the same in a second term. Certainly better than a democrat. And I suspect a lot better than most republicans. How does Trump compare to Bush 43?

Our Kentucky long rifle was far superior to the British smoothbore “Brown Bess.”

Our Revolutionary War was won by well-trained Regulars, armed with smoothbore muskets. The "Kentucky" rifle was useful for scouts and rangers, but utterly useless for the close formation warfare necessary to actually WIN in 1781.

Just not true. Bump stocks. Biden pushes for AWB, but Trump was just as bad bringing up ANY restrictions on the 2nd. If anything he should’ve done like W and pushed to remove like W did on the 94 AWB.

I honestly don’t know if Desantis would be better, but Trump was real, real horrible on this topic.

Where is the video of Trump wanting to ban AR-15s?

There's the YouTube video in the original post where Trump tells Feinstein that "the country just needs the right president" to get her assault weapons ban passed.

The National Rifle Association is calling for a federal review of bump stocks, a weapon modifier that allows semi-automatic weapons to fire faster.

The NRA, in its first statement since the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas, said that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives should "immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law."

"The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations," the statement reads.

NRA calls for federal review of bump stocks after Vegas shooting

The nation was is shock after the vegas shooting, and many on the right, were under pressure to 'do something'.

So, one of the responses was the well known, national 'gun rights organization', the nra, called for a review, and Trump took that advise

Are people 2nd guessing things, and saying Trump shouldn't have followed the nra's advice?

Then how should Trump have responded, that wouldn't have increased the attacks on the 2A, otherwise?

“I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15,” Trump told aides as he flew on Marine One to the White House in August 2019, according to a person who heard his comments.

"A person who heard his comments."

Well, that narrows it down. The comments were heard by a person. They weren't heard by just a dog or a cat.

I’m not coming at you personally on this one, 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘙𝘪𝘧𝘭𝘦 is a technical term for a selective fire, small arm that fires an intermediate powered cartridge fed from a detachable box magazine with typical capacity of 30 cartridges. 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘞𝘦𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘯 is a nebulous political term that is used by both ignorant and knowledgeable Fudds, politicians, activists, and media talking heads to either advance antigun policy or in the case of Fudds, rest comfortably while rights are slowly being stripped away through executive fiat.

Regarding Don Jr., and Eric Trump. I haven’t heard anything in particular that counters them being pro gun.
