Oh snap!!! The writer went THERE!! Hit us with a Dolores Umbridge reference. Wow, he was really punching low on this one because no one deserves to be likened to Dolores Umbridge. Maybe “you know who,” but that’s about it.
… Uncatchable ball...
The call was for HOLDING, not pass interference. Holding does not require a forward pass.
Second year in a row where a debatable defensive holding penalty in the red zone late in the game ruined what would have been a dramatic finish, whether or not the Eagles would have come back. Hated to see the game end the way it did.
Yes. They would have just kicked a longer field goal, left more time on the clock for the Eagles, maybe a minute or so..................
I turned on ESPN and Fox Sports for a while at noon to see if this was an issue with major sportscasters that while knowledgable are known to stoke controversy. It was not an issue as it probably would have resulted in the same outcome if not called.
That being said, there are a certain number of fans each year that say.”We was robbed.” It is more predictable than the instance of a big call and this was not a big call. As one commentator said, Philly was going to do nothing with 90 seconds. They are a hard driving, consistent medium gain team and rarely get the deep three play scoring drive.
One guy said with a QBR of 100 and 99.4 for Mahomes the game came down to really good versus Pinnacle of the Game.
Its may have been a bad call, but it wasn’t the worst call. Officials have been ruining football games for years.
The official NFL rule book has 288 pages. They need to take out about 280 of them.
The Eagles player who held admitted he did it, so this overheated article is simply wrong. And a few plays earlier the refs had overlooked an obvious targeting penalty against the Eagles when one of them slammed his helmet into Pacheco. On the whole the Eagles got much the better of most of the close calls during the game, including two long reception decisions, and an Eagle fumble/Chiefs touchdown called back. The Eagles played well, but the better team won.
no evidence of WIDESPREAD bad calls by refs
When your defense folds you tend to lose
The Eagles would have had more time. BUT the rules are the rules. They were out on an island, easily visible to the refs, behind the line of scrimmage where a defender can clock a receiver, but you still can’t hold. He held. He admitted he held. Them’s the rules. I’ve never really bought into this mentality that late penalties must be egregious or they ruin the game. IMHO if it’s a penalty in pre-season it should be a penalty in OT of the SB. And that’s a penalty most of the time. And if the defender wanted to disrupt the timing he should have just hard blocked. No hold, no penalty, no problem.
The receiver was not impeded even a tiny amount.
For the record I don’t like the Eagles or the Chiefs. I think we’re done with football.
I didn’t care who won and didn’t watch the game.
I looked at the video of the “play” and it was a good call. You have to look at the defender’s hand clutching the receiver’s jersey at the lower back from behind and slowing him down. It happens at the very beginning of the video, the rest is irrelevant. He pulled on the jersey and slowed the receiver. The timing between QB and receiver was ruined by the grab.
Kudos to the ref for making the correct gutsy call.
Wasn’t any worse than eagles pass/ catch and fumble pass that KC pickup up for a touchdown....
“Uncatchable.”
Uncatchable has nothing to do with holding calls, only pass interference, which wasn’t called. The defender held the receiver, it’s at the very start of the clip. Slowed the receiver enough to mess up the timing.
Correct...... Sour grapes from Eagles fans..................
holding is still a good call even when pass is not catchable. I think they let both teams get away with a little bit more handsy plays during the game but when it come right down to it, he did grab his waist and hold him. It was a great game for both teams but someone had to lose.
As posted above, the clear tug on the jersey prior to the pic (above) probably generated the call. I don’t think that tug had much effect, but, that’s tough to judge as it involves balance too. Those tugs from the back get called quite a bit...
In the after game interviews, the Philly players were quite classy and said that call wasn’t why they lost.
(I was really impressed with all the post-game interviews I saw. Mahomes’ (paraphrasal) “Oh, God, don’t make me run anything but straight!” is a classic.)
