(vanity) Get a second phone for business only?
self | 2/4/23 | NewJerseyJoe

I have a full-time job (which is now fully remote, yay) and am looking for more remote part-time work. What people are now calling "overemployed."

Question: it seems to me that it's best to have a second phone line for business -- both for security/privacy purposes and just to keep personal and work lives separate. Do others of you do the same? I've looked into dual SIM, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc. Virtual phones (Google Voice) have their place but can't be used in every situation (i.e., some places/services will not accept a virtual phone for verification and apparently are able to tell the difference).

Seems to me a second physical phone is really the best option. Your opinion? Your preference?

Try Pure Talk. If you are a member of AMAC, a retired person’s organization, similar to AARP, you can get a monthly rate of $ 10.00 per line. Anyway, check out their website, we’ve had this phone service for 5 years now and love it. (Sorry to sound like their commercial. LOL)

I use Mint, with their base data package of 4 GB per month. I’m almost always in a place that has Wi-Fi so data is not necessary. I’ve haven’t experienced any problems with voice or text services. For $15 per month it’s a pretty good deal.

At times, I’ve done the two phone thing, and honestly it’s a pain. Phones take up pocket space, and you need to keep both charged which is another hassle. Ultimately, I decided on just using one phone (physical SIM for one number and eSIM for the other number). With android at least you can adjust your preferences on the fly (switching between the 2 numbers for texts, voice, data while always being able to receive calls/texts on both). It’s not without hiccups, though, especially if you travel internationally and the two SIMs vary in terms of data/text privileges

I get what you’re saying — but my plan is to never leave the house with that second phone. It will be used only at home for remote work purposes.

I carried two phones for about 5 years. It was a hassle. But it was necessity. I’m grateful to be retired and only keeping track of one, now.

I don’t like to use the phone these days. I don’t know which is worse—today’s voice mail or the party lines of the 1950’s.

Sign up for Ooma, add on their premier service and you get a free 2nd line. You can port your main home number to it, and the second line can be your business line. They have nice DECT 6 handsets, and desk phones that you can use to make or take calls on either line, screen calls, retrieve voicemail, etc. Ooma does a decent, though imperfect job of blocking spam calls too. They offer some nice features, like simultaneous ring - so you can have your home number ring both at home and on your mobile phone at once, and the call can be taken from either.

If I recall correctly, it is under $200 annually, all in (VoiP service, local & long distance calling, premier package, taxes, regulatory fees, etc., etc.).

It is possible that a Google Voice number will work for you, you will just need a wifi connection.

If you are over 55 you can get unlimited 2 lines for 90 a month with tmobile. I tether through my openwrt router using Easy Tehter Pro and use one for full time internet in the office. I have seen nothing cheaper than the tmobile plan. The phones are about $150 for the entry level 5g phone. And where I am it is faster than any landline internet.

No. There are certain websites I’d be working with that require text verification from an actual phone, not a virtual one. I have read other users saying that Google Voice and similar services do NOT work on these.

Verizon wireless has a product called One Talk. For $15/month you add the app to your phone. No contract.

You can use it to call text etc.

It has a separate number so you are all set.

Nope. You are still giving money to the big 3. Just threw a middleman.

Kinda like government and taxes.

Patriot mobile owns 0 cell towers.

Whenever I answer the phone for a suspicious number (which is rare anyway) I always inform the caller my phone is for personal entertainment only and any business must be done in writing or on person. They usually hang up.

I switched to Pure Talk and my “plan” offered a hotspot at the $30 rate. All of a sudden it was cut off and I now have to pay $55 to get the hotspot.
Not sure about Pure Talk based on my experience.

I have a Google voice number which has reliability issues so it would be best to avoid for that reason alone. In the past year we replaced our Vonage voip line with an additional Ting mobile line as a home office phone line which has worked well.

Ting mobile has a nice plan called Flex. $10 per line with unlimited talk and text. Data is $5 per GB which is shared across all lines on the account. Have 5 lines and paying less than $60 a month (we don’t use a lot of data).
