Damar Hamlin’s Collapse Highlights the Violence Black Men Experience in Football

The “terrifyingly ordinary” nature of football’s violence disproportionately affects Black men

Millions of people watched as Damar Hamlin, a 24-year-old player in the National Football League (NFL), executed a seemingly routine tackle during a highly anticipated Monday Night Football game. Immediately after, Hamlin rose to his feet and then collapsed. Players from his team, the Buffalo Bills, and the opposing team, the Cincinnati Bengals, created a tight huddle around him on the field as medical personnel tried to revive him. We learned the next day that Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest; his heart had suddenly stopped working.

This scene was horrific for both its regularity and its exceptionality. Matt Gutman of ABC tweeted as much: “The scariest part of this is that the hit was in fact not scary. It looked terrifyingly ordinary.” The ordinariness of men running into each other at full speed represents a normalized—even rationalized—violence that is routine to this American game.

This ordinary violence has always riddled the sport and it affects all players. But Black players are disproportionately affected. While Black men are severely underrepresented in positions of power across football organizations, such as coaching and management, they are overrepresented on the gridiron. Non-white players account for 70 percent of the NFL; nearly half of all Division I college football players are Black. Further, through a process called racial stacking, coaches racially segregate athletes by playing position. These demographic discrepancies place Black athletes at a higher risk during play.

NFL with all 24 hr coverage

Then Fox and ESPN takes over Coverage and says - these guys really love each other, players from one team go out with players from other teams, and they are like family, brothers.

Yet, YESTERDAY, a player hit a QB and injured him, and while he writhed in pain, the guy that injured him laid next to him and did 15-25 Snow Angels. Then when he went to the sideline as Medical personnel treated him, he did the Asleep gesture in celebration- that he put him to sleep.

And no players, coaches, announcers, networks (other than his own coach) - criticized his actions. In fact, Sunday Night FB, censored it - and didn’t even mention it while mocking the performance of the injured QB.

Isn’t Tony Dungy the fake moral arbiter for NFL coverage? He couldn’t find it in him to criticize the thug, like every other member of the Liberal Sports Media.

Some people want to be lied to, I don’t want the lies nor hypocrisy.

coaches racially segregate athletes by playing position.

Typically players at the same position have meetings, drills, etc.

I guess the wide receivers should work out with the defensive linemen. Maybe put the kickers and punters in with the defensive backs.

For that matter, the lower ranking assistant coaches are in charge of the players at one position. Maybe do it alphabetically instead.

You are correct.. I’m always mixing up those two. My mom was a 49ers fanatic.. she begged me to take her to that practice... Joe Montana and Steve Young were both still on the team.. it was ‘89.

We played tackle football without helmets or pads... kind of crazy looking back at it. We were free range where I lived...

The day after Thanksgiving was our neighborhood Turkey bowl where we kids would play tackle football. We would use cut up old socks and pad them with foam for shin and arm protection. Fun times!

The racial element is bound up in the reason why an overwhelming proportion of the players are black. Race is the reason black people are much more likely to be gifted with the physique which is advantageous in that sport as its currently played. Same with basketball.

IMO, Tom Brady is a narcissist who is ego driven and self centered. Here he has a contract allegedly in the $300 million range and he wants to continue playing risking his health and future. Do us all a favor; leave. I, and perhaps a whole lot of others have had our fill of your tenure.

Yet, it’s proof in every other field of discrimination and prejudice.

The Sports Media and Media is having it both ways.

The numbers indicate discrimination and prejudice against whites.

Is the author advocating for more white football players? How about more Asian players?

Do the white men in football not experience violence, too?

So this is caused by black on black violence at the behest of white racist team owners but this same racism keeps blacks from becoming racists over the smalle4 number of white players and it’s not fair...got it.

There should be quotas in the NFL to spread the violence to deserving white players.

So no one else experiences it like they do? Not white, Polynesian or Latino?

Exactly.

Likewise how are these same whiners going to force blacks to pursue engineering?

Depends on if black men are disproportionately represented on the playing field.

Ummmm…. did the author of this article watch the video replay of the tackle?

Hamlin was tackled by a black player.

It’s also part of why Brady is “the GOAT”. Because he gets lots of breaks with the wimpy rules.
