On Tuesday, Trump-endorsed Kevin McCarthy failed three times to win the vote for US Speaker of the House. It was the first time in 100 years that Speakership was not decided in the first vote.
Kevin McCarthy lost the third vote for House Speaker on Tuesday afternoon, with 20 Republicans voting for Rep. Jim Jordan.
The winning Republican can only afford to lose four votes! He must reach 218 votes to win the Speakership. And the GOP holds a narrow 222 to 212 majority in the chamber.
On Wednesday morning McCarthy lost a 4th time! Then a fifth time. And then in the afternoon Kevin McCarthy lost a sixth time.
This was despite the fact that President Trump endorsed Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday morning and urged Republicans to vote for McCarthy.
The actions of these principled conservatives who refuse to support Kevin McCarthy is infuriating to party insiders, the Uniparty, lobbyists, and GOP elites.
The 7th Vote was started at noon on Thursday – No Speaker. The 8th Vote was held on Thursday afternoon – No Speaker. The 9th vote was held on Thursday afternoon – No Speaker. And, now the 10th vote was held on Thursday afternoon – No Speaker.

Nominate Trump and vote him in as Speaker.
Spull it.
Yes, I'm not sure why they are running up the number of attempts. Doesn't each side have a whip count ahead of time?
Why keep running up the number of rounds, when neither side has the votes to do anything?
Who benefits from the failures?
It's as if McCarthy wants to make a deal with the Democrats and he can't do that until he gives the appearance that he tried to resolve the issue with the Republicans.
Thus the numerous failed attempts.
Watch for McCarty to make a deal with the Dems.
“ Isn’t Trump trying to seal the deal for his man, McCarthy?”
Trump says McCarthy is the guy to vote for.
That’s an entirely different thing. There are a multitude of reasons he could be saying that.
I agree with you, if you go over Jimmy Dore’s podcast, he and a few other liberals are sitting and watching with amazement.
Back in 2018 when the Democrats won the majority by a similar margin to today, Jimmy Dore and a few other liberals came up with the idea to force a floor vote on Medicare for All, basically have the “squad” withhold their vote from Pelosi until she gave in and agreed to a floor vote for Medicare for all, the Squad caved and never forced any concessions from Pelosi.
If the group of 20 can force McCarthy out or get enough concessions from him to advance an agenda, then regardless of how much crap they take it would be a great thing.
Not true. Late yesterday, Wed., he agreed to most of the demands of the Holdouts. He’s budged way more than inch.
Agreeing and keeping his word are two different things. A weasel like McCarthy is not to be trusted, as he'll just renege on any concessions he's made, just like a Democrat would.
Wait, what? Have those words ever been used in a sentence before?
One almost totally agrees with you...
Which district are you in? :)
Fundamentally, responding to true national emergencies is the province of the Executive Branch. And while I abhor the fact that Joe Biden is President, I actually hold Congress in lower regard than I do the Executive Branch, even when the latter is controlled by the Democrats.
If people don't realize by now that Congress is a clown car, stuffed full of various self-satisfied morons and grifting @ssholes, then I can't help them.
Although, I suppose to be fair, there's no better descriptor for members of the House than "Representatives." Because, for the most part, the American electorate itself is today pretty much a clown car, stuffed full of various self-satisfied morons and grifting @ssholes.
In short, James Madison, et al. were simply wrong. What can I say?
McCarthy's problem is no one trusts him to keep his word.
Here are 19 of the House Rs who voted against McCarthy:
Andy Biggs
Dan Bishop
Lauren Boebert
Josh Brecheen
Mike Cloud
Andrew Clyde
Eli Crane
Matt Gaetz
Bob Good
Paul Gosar
Andy Harris
Anna Paulina Luna
Mary Miller
Ralph Norman
Andy Ogles
Scott Perry
Matt Rosendale
Chip Roy
Keith Self
It got Grant in trouble and it got Trump in trouble also.
I suspect it would be way more than 20 if the vote was by secret ballot. But McCarthy wants an open ballot so he knows who to punish for not voting his way. “No committee positions for you!!!”
Just imagine how irritated McCarthy is going to be if/when they make him go to all the trouble of moving his junk out of the Speaker’s Office. Better get a big mop for all the tears he will leave behind.
Congress, especially the House, has offloaded almost all their responsibilities to the Executive and the Courts. They are irrelevant in any kind of emergency.
Paraphrasing a line from High Plains Drifter, “agreein’ is one thing, payin’s another.”
At this point they should neve4 back down. They should be talking months not days or vote counts. They should nominate some Democrats or some outsiders. Nominate an old school Liberal, Tulsi maybe. Nominate from the left of center. Nominate non politicians. This needs to be an F.U to the whole system.
Unfortunately, Trump only got one vote (Gaetz).
“ McCarthy won’t budge an inch for the conservatives but will bend over backwards for the Democrats “
He has already budged a bunch of inches….and still hasn’t gotten one of the holdouts to vote for him.
