Agreed. And it is also why we became one of the most prosperous countries in history.

On the capitalist side, they are honest and say they are doing it to make money.

On the Leftist side, they say they are doing it to protect the workers, but it is simply to obtain power and enrich themselves.

Many employers discovered that treating their employees well made them more productive. That works when things are going well and companies have to capability to do that.

Which is bad for Leftists.

Which is why they try to destroy the economy. It is all very Alinskyite.

I say good for her. Yes part of retail life is you gotta wait for your replacement. But everybody in the building should be geared to handle that. The schedule should have the necessary overlap built in, people should show up on time and the boss should be ready for the switch out. Chaos happens and sometimes things don’t go smoothly. But if it’s everyday that ain’t chaos, that’s crap bosses. Those people making fun of her should ask themselves why they just let the company eat their time.

I have worked at places that treat people like dirt. People respond by just doing enough not to be fired like Peter in “The Office Space” movie. I have worked lots of overtime and have worked with people who just show up and do little but still get the overtime pay.

I have worked with people who blame everyone around them (like the democrat politicians do) that undermines those that do their job. In my last job I had a manager and supervisor who drove people out of their job just so they could hire someone at a lower rate and they would get a big bonus at the end of the year.

Over 35 years ago at my first job (family business) I learned the supervisors were getting $10,000 bonus at the end of the year and they were making under $10/hr base pay. What the current rate is at the last company I do not know.

She needs to find another job that is better as her current job will not improve. When I got a new job it ended up having me making more money each time.

My sister tells me of a young couple in their early 20’s who have a baby that comes over to her place to mooch that have no steady job as the guy cannot seem to hold onto one for long. She says they live at home of one of the parents and get various welfare.

“ That said, if you’re salaried, you just suck it up. I’ve been in IT for 25+ years. There’s no such thing as a set schedule.”

Yup. Going salary was the biggest mistake I have ever made.

“Leaving on the “dot” gives the impression that your mind is elsewhere during your time on the job.”

As a business owner and employer. I would like to agree with you, but I don’t, at least not for lower level employees. Many of my non-exempt, hourly employees have other commitments, like another job or child care, and they need to leave promptly at 5:00 pm for a good reason. If I hire someone to work 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but really want them to stay until 5:15 pm, then should have clearly stated that in the job description.

On the other hand, I do agree with you for most exempt, salaried employees. I had an attorney on staff $120,000+ per year, who worked 9 to 5 and not a minute longer. I told him that if wants to work secretarial hours then he should become a secretary at $30 per hour. He didn’t get the hint. I fired him. He now works at a bank.

Being one who’s self-employed and works 80 hr weeks, it’s my opinion that clock punchers shouldn’t be guilted into staying longer. That said, I have no special regard for those that proudly express indifference to the machinery that ultimately puts food on the table.

and have also had quite a few bosses that laid it out very explicitly from Day One that no one is irreplaceable,

And I have told a boss that no job is irreplaceable in a metroplex with a population of over 6 million.

I never heard another word of her BS after that.

If she's not paid for the work she is justified

Even if she's paid for the work she's justified. If she is scheduled to work till 4 PM and she leaves at 4 PM then she is doing what she was assigned.

If an employee was unwilling, then the boss would simply find another, who was

Easier said than done these days.

In most cases at shift change the head pressman was expected to come in 15 minutes or so early to get a rundown of what was happening and stay about 15 minutes after shift to make sure what he did not leave a pile of crap for the next crew.

But that was clearly understood from the beginning. In this instance it's the employer suddenly dropping another hour or two on what they wanted the person to work. What if they had made an appointment based on their expected quitting time? What if they just didn't want the overtime? Either way I can't criticize the employee.

I briefly worked for a retail chain after retiring from a corporate job, thinking it would be fun—wow! Was I naïve! But I had the opposite problem—because I was one of the older workers, I was also one of the most productive. So they wanted me to work as much as possible up to 39.5 hours, but not a minute more, or they would have had to give me benefits and overtime. So I had a ridiculous workload that had to be hurried up and got done to beat the clock!

Good list of poor management. Add this: lots of “shrink” at the retail location because:

• managers let grifters return things that clearly were used and stained;
• merchandise layouts are imposed by HQ in a remote location and do nothing to reduce temptation in the local store;
• workers are not trained to spot theft at checkout, such as concealing items inside other items, then returning the outer item the next day;
• HQ won’t provide security features of any kind.

So the store gets robbed blind. Lots of the stuff ends up for sale on eBay. But the workers only get minimum wage.

I’d have to agree some stores do that. Family member worked as cashier and when time to quit the front manager shut down the terminals. They cashed out terminals at certain times as well.

Floor workers generally simply left their departments at quitting time.

I also did that after taking early retirement. What an unpleasant experience. They spotted how effectively and efficient I worked and dumped three more depts. on me to attend to!

I was raised to “work” and do my best at whatever job I had. ...that will always show to be evident if others aren’t working. They tend to “let you” do the work since they know you’ll get it done.

That was bad enough but when they wanted me to unpack and organize freight in a bitter cold freight room that was more than enough for me to say - times up I’m outta here!

No; I read Dilbert.

And if you think that strip promotes workers, look at Wally.

LOL — yep! I left the day they called me on my day off and begged me to come in. I said I can’t be there for the beginning of the shift because I’m 25 miles away. “Doesn’t matter— just get here as soon as you can!” So I got there 10 minutes after the shift began, and there was also a change of managers for that shift, and the second manager wrote me up for being late!

I was so gone!

They’re lucky you agreed to go in. I never gave up my day off - they soon learned I wasn’t one to call. I wasn’t about to put myself on their call list.

Box stores are the worst retail to work in. High end retail is better but the wages are about the same unless you get commission. A lot less issues with management and other employs as well.
