On March 11, UNC-Chapel Hill announced the appointment of a new dean for the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Raul Reis, whose hiring was approved by the board of trustees, will officially begin his duties on July 1.
An important backdrop to Reis’s appointment is the unsuccessful hiring of “1619 Project” author Nikole Hannah-Jones as Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism.
This time last year, news outlets were closely following the heated controversy that consumed UNC-Chapel Hill over whether or not to grant Hannah-Jones a tenured position. When the university’s board of trustees requested more information before bringing her candidacy to a vote, the administration attempted to expedite her hiring by instead granting her a five-year contract. That way, the school could hire her without the board’s approval. Hannah-Jones initially agreed to a five-year contract but later demanded that she be hired with tenure protections.
Even after the board ultimately decided to grant her tenure, Hannah-Jones declined the offer and instead accepted a tenured position at Howard University.
The J-School’s dean at the time, Susan King, resigned shortly after Hannah-Jones’s decision to reject UNC. Up until recently, the school had been searching for someone to fill King’s position.
Many on campus viewed the whole affair as an egregious failure of inclusivity and as a shocking demonstration of systemic racism at work in the university.

J Schools have always been propaganda factories—they have just gotten a bit more blatant about it these days.

Yeah, wonder how them Journalism courses are being taught......
Journalism is a dying field. Bloggers and Vlogers have proven they are as good as the graduates.

Yep. See Tagline.
Well, they just confirmed that NOTHING TO DO WITH JOURNALISM will actually be taught
Somewhat related, my credit union decided to “upgrade” its on line format so they bought into a start up which advertised itself as a diverse company. The transition was to take place the weekend beginning May Friday May 13 and be up and running on May 16. Today’s note on the site: we don’t know when it will be available.
The CU spent 20Million to finance this company. They have the staff working around the clock to fix the thing and to answer phone calls about account status. They even opened branches on sunday. I am sure the OT cost is out of sight costs not to even include how much good will they have lost. I understand there is not beginning a large out flow of money as people flee to other institutions.
The final upshot is, the CEO was out of the country on a remote vacation when this began.
Go woke go broke is a great idiom to cover this mess.
UNC, esp. Chapel Hill, is far down the MARXIST, self-hating white liberals and black fascists world. And it is only going to get worse.
I recall miss Prof. Adams (RIP).
The “Hussman” name will have to go next. Maybe he will
ask for his donated money back. If Mr. Hussman had placed
an equal effort into scrutinizing his own ADG newspaper
he would have discovered all the pernicious influences
per the woke under his own nose—all unchallenged too.
Many of the columnists are in a “conversation” mode with
all the malign woke influences a person could imagine.
Throw in Soros derived open borders stuff presented for
free for years—blatant and obvious.
