For years now, through controversy after controversy, House Minority Leader KEVIN MCCARTHY has bent over backward to stay in former President DONALD TRUMP’s good graces, all to serve one major purpose: He wants to be speaker someday.
That hope may have just blown up on the launchpad.
On Thursday night, NYT’s Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns delivered an absolute stunner of a scoop: an audio recording of a phone call on Jan. 10, 2021, in which McCarthy is heard clearly and unambiguously saying that Trump should resign. Listen for yourself
What happens on the tape: McCarthy essentially conspires with Rep. LIZ CHENEY (R-Wyo.) about how to get Trump to step down as president after the Jan. 6 insurrection. On the call, Cheney — now Trump’s Enemy No. 1, but at the time, the House GOP’s No. 3 leader — asks McCarthy if Trump is going to resign. McCarthy responds: “I mean, you guys all know him, too — do you think he’d ever back away? But what I think I’m going to do is I’m going to call him … The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this [impeachment resolution] will pass and it would be my recommendation you should resign.”

McCarthy should resign. He is a useless tool for the dark forces that rigged the election. He did nothing to so much as object to that, let alone stop it. He thinks Trump should have resigned after we won reelection? “Eff him.

Remember, should the GOP win a House majority, the selection of a Speaker nominee will come in the first few weeks after the election... by the lame duck Congress.

Probably not. However, there are plenty that I'd much rather become speaker than McCarthy. The democrats strategy over the last 40 years has been to move the Overton window left, they move two steps left when they get into power and when the republicans get in they move it one step right. Over time we've got to where we are because of people like Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy. Putting republicans in that are only slightly less left than real democrats has put us on the verge of a totalitarian leftist takeover. McCarthy is an assistant democrat, he's not what we need to stop the destruction of our country.

Yep. Which is a possible reason McCarthy hasn’t kicked he off Committee Assignments. He knew or thought a recording might exist.
I agree with you that there are plenty more reps who would be good Speakers.
As an aside, I always liked Kevin and defended him, but this is a bridge too far and I think he does not have the insight and ability to REPRESENT us.

This is painful, I really though he was going to be good for our side.
He should be but we know he won’t be.
If that recording came from Cheney they MUST toss her out of party. That is beyond squabbling, it is dealing directly with the enemy.
If the midterm goes as expected there may be more than fifty new Republican house members. Hopefully, they will seek a change of leadership for someone more forceful and positive.

If the Republicans get out of their own way and actually take control of the House and Senate it will be a hollow victory if they then turn around and keep Mitch and Mike in positions of power !
