My regiment put Canada on the map and did in hours what nobody else could do in years. We have a history of messing things up.

Feds really stepped in it today.

RE: Like Hitler’s Germany....
From German Bundestag online:
“ Hitler prevailed upon Hindenburg to dissolve the Reichstag on 1 February 1933 and call a general election. The Reichstag fire on the night of 27 to 28 February 1933 provided a welcome pretext for the enactment of the Presidential Order for the Protection of the Nation and the State, commonly known as the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended the fundamental individual rights enshrined in the Weimar Constitution ‘until further notice’; in fact, they remained in abeyance until the end of the Third Reich.”

Trudeau must be thinking “Gee that sounds exciting. I’ll really be in charge then.”

I hope that the Ukrainian folks are safe and out of danger.
They will become productive citizens of Canada.
I wish the best for them and Canada too.

Oh my; memories of 1933 Germany, didn’t Hitler suspend the German Parliament before he took TOTAL POWER?

And then proceeded to MURDER 100’s of thousands of his own people, then 10’s of millions of others!

Perhaps you misunderstood. The ‘They’ was the police who moved in on the peaceful protestors and pepper sprayed the peaceful protestors after the peaceful protestors said the Lord’s Prayer.

Did you really interpret what I wrote as ‘ the violent protesters moved in and pepper sprayed the police after the police said the Lord’s Prayer’ ?

Here’s some more video clips of the police abusing the peaceful protesters in case I didn’t make it clear. Plenty of angles too.

“or the Queen herself can dismiss him.”

Ummm, no she can’t.
Canada was granted independence December, 1931.
In an unusual situation Queen Elizabeth takes no part in the governance of Canada and although referred to as the Queen of Canada her duties are only symbolic in nature. The odd photo op, parade, state dinner, etc.

Now in theory Elizabeth could club the little socialist down but I very seriously doubt she would.

For a broader explanation....

You know it’s bad when someone from China’s media and Iran’s Ahmadinejad condemns Trudeau.

The Governor General acts as the direct agent of the monarch in constitutional terms and is considered one of two “heads of state” in Canada. Even before the 1931 legislation the GG had important powers and once intervened in a parliamentary crisis (in 1926) dissolving a sitting parliament against the wishes of the minority Liberal government of the time.

Since then various GGs have avoided intervening in various crises including the 1970 War Measures Act (imposed by Pierre Trudeau after Quebec separatists murdered a Quebec provincial politician and kidnapped a British diplomat). There was a fairly serious political crisis in 1982 over repatriation of the constitution and the GG abstained from that one, also when many hoped the GG would dismiss a corrupt Liberal government around 2003 that was refusing to call an election. So basically the GG has been regarded as a ceremonial post and not an active political player; the Queen has never taken any direct role in Canadian politics and in constitutional terms there is nothing she could do about this, only the Governor General has that power.

Nobody following Canadian politics expects that the current GG would do anything more than to rubber stamp anything that the government asks her to endorse.

As for our Senate, that is an appointed body whose constitutional powers are considerable but in practice, held more in reserve than used. The partisan division in the Senate is almost entirely Liberal-Conservative, the socialist NDP has never held power so they have never had a chance to appoint a senator. However, many of the Senators are from a generation past in political terms and have no strong ties to the current parties or their leaders. Their role has been to hold hearings on legislation that they must ratify before it becomes law (sent up from the Commons) and rarely do they do much more than tinker with a few minor details of that legislation. In this case, nobody knows for sure how they might respond to the Emergency Act sent up for them to debate and ratify. If the House doesn’t strike it down, they could. It would probably be the first time in a very long history where they did anything that dramatic.

People in Canada call the Senate the “taskless thanks” and it is regarded as the last and ultimate patronage appointment. They resist abolition or electoral reform simply by outlasting any or all political campaigns to reform them. The make-up of the Senate is somewhat different from that of the House, it is supposed to be done on a formula of so many per province, but many of the Senators have been national political figures and their ties to the province they nominally “represent” can be dubious. They are largely obscure figures, I follow politics closely and could name you fifty MPs quite easily but probably not even half a dozen senators. 99% of the time, nobody realizes they are there and their impact on everyday life in Canada is zero, they are not a corrupt body with a harmful influence so much as a neutered body with no influence. If they never met at all, we would have exactly the same result.

And if anyone wondered, if the House did strike down the Emergency Act, (a) it would no longer be in force, and (b) that nullification would not go to the Senate to be ratified, they only get to ratify active decisions not terminations.

I interpreted it as the protesters saying the Lord’s Prayer and the police attacking them for no reason.

By angles I meant that the storm troopers do not care about anything, not even if people are praying. The government will soon to after people of faith.

I can’t edit but for anyone who cared about that 1926 situation, I had it in reverse, upon reading over the references, I realized that what the GG had done there was to refuse a request for an election by the minority Liberal government, instead the Conservatives with some prospects of forming a coalition were given a chance to govern (this is within the powers of the GG), but that government only lasted weeks before losing a non-confidence motion and an election was then called, and the Liberals were returned to power with a majority. This fiasco led to the 1931 Westminster conference and its revised laws about the roles of the GG in Canada and other commonwealth dominions like Australia and New Zealand. The result has been to diminish both the powers and the appetite to use said powers of future GGs.

History repeating.

He later responded to political opposition to his rule by dissolving Parliament on several occasions and in 1629 decided to rule entirely without Parliament. In 1642, the bitter struggle between king and Parliament for supremacy led to the outbreak of the first English civil war.

The Parliamentarians were led by Oliver Cromwell, whose formidable Ironsides force won an important victory against the king’s Royalist forces at Marston Moor in 1644 and at Naseby in 1645. As a leader of the New Model Army in the second English civil war, Cromwell helped repel the Royalist invasion of Scotland, and in 1646 Charles surrendered to a Scottish army. In 1648, Charles was forced to appear before a high court controlled by his enemies, where he was convicted of treason and sentenced to death. Early in the next year, he was beheaded.<

Yes, she can. Canada was granted independence from the British Parliament in 1931, but retained the British royal family as its head of state, as your source affirms:

"These two seemingly contradictory situations work together because Canada operates as what is called a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch agrees to delegate her powers to the nation’s elected politicians, rather than use them herself. In Canadian law, the impressive powers of the monarch are thus formally held by Elizabeth II but lent to other people, mostly the Prime Minister of Canada (sometimes described as “her” prime minister), who governs on the Queen’s behalf and passes laws in her name using her royal authority. Canadian laws are often full of phrases like “Her Majesty requests” this, or “Her Majesty desires” that… it’s ceremony and theatre to honour the idea of delegated royal power. In reality, the Queen doesn’t care one way or another, and is not personally involved in these decisions."

Now in theory Elizabeth could club the little socialist down but I very seriously doubt she would.

Right, not that she can't, but that she usually doesn't involve herself in the dirty business of politics. However, if the situation were to deteriorate sufficiently, she may choose to sack the PM and call a general election to solve the problem. Considering all of the bad PR the royal family suffered recently with Prince Andrew paying millions in a settlement for sex with a minor who was getting pimped out by Epstein, she may want to get some favorable PR from Canada. Again, if Canadians don't petition her for such action, it is very unlikely to happen. However unlikely, that has a stronger chance of happening than the GG, whom Trudy recommended to the Queen, taking action against her patron.

Just a few days ago the Canadian foreign ministry tweeted sharp words at Cuba over human rights violations. It was either completely tone deaf, a middle finger to the Ottawa protesters, or both.

“Canada condemns #Cuba’s harsh sentencing following the July 2021 protests. 🇨🇦 strongly advocates for freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly free from intimidation. We stand with the people of 🇨🇺 in their aspiration for #democracy.”
