The first US case of the Omicron COVID strain has been confirmed in the state of California, Dr. Anthony Fauci announced during a press briefing on Wednesday.
The “variant of concern,” which has already been reported in seventeen countries, has now reached California, the president’s top medical adviser said while flanked by White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
Dr. Anthony Fauci said the infected individual, who was fully vaccinated, had just returned from South Africa to the San Francisco area on Nov. 22 and tested positive on Nov. 29.
I thought Cali was the north star for how we were all supposed to handle the KungFlu.
So where did this person recently travel from?

simplified: Some PCR tests can tell the difference between Delta and Omicron variants.
The Omicron variant Spike protein has a mutation that causes it to test "negative" in some rt-PCR tests, but the Envelope and Nucleocapsid proteins still test positive. So when a test result is "S-, E+, M+", it's probably the Omicron variant. Genetic sequencing is required to be certain.

How did they determine the strain so quickly? I call BS.
South Africa like Israel has some of the world’s premier biolabs. They have an large and active pharmaceutical industry with BL3 labs available publicly and likely BL4 still secretly they had a very active and large bioweapons program during the apartheid regime. They have the technology to sequence the SARS COVID virus down to the individual base of its RNA in a days time or less once PCR replication is done and that is under 24 hours in a high end lab.
I was thinking more of a logistical problem than a capability problem; was the strain identified here or in SA, etc.?
Seems awfully convenient to have someone test hot with the latest panic variant two days after they arrive. I'm sure the Omicron variant was here well before this breaking news.
