Also, since “SUV” is pronounced as “ess yoo vee,” the correct article is “an,” not “a.” At least, that’s what I remember being taught when I was in elementary school back in the 1970s. Was my teacher wrong? Is my memory wrong? Have the rules of grammar been changed? Or is the Washington Post being run by people who don’t know the basic rules of grammar?

The writer wishes to spend time parsing the article a vs an. I’d rather make an argument against using the word “tragedy” in situations where there is intentional and preventable human caused malice resulting in injury or death. An earthquake or tornado which kills is a tragedy, as they are also unpreventable. A POS filthy aspiring rapper (aka “loser”) who runs over babies with “AN” SUV is a slaughter, or massacre, or act of terrorism. It’s not some damn Shakespearian act of romantic fate.
