It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.
An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.
Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.
On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”
“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.
Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”

Alec Baldwin is a huge tool ! I wouldn’t watch any movie that windbag is in. Sad someone lost their life to someone who thinks himself so intelligent above others, yet has no idea how to safely handle a firearm.
Neither fits. They should have said "few".
Didn’t that B-list actor Jon Erik Hexum accidentally kill himself by joking around with a handgun? I seem to remember he shot himself thru the temple with a blank and died instantly.
Which is why a safety officer is supposed to test the gun before handing it to the actor. He points the gun with blanks at a piece of paper the distance between the gun and the "victim". If any of the ejected gunpowder hits the paper, a lower amount of gunpowder is used.
Baldwin is responsible to check the gun himself.
Probably didn’t even know how anyway.
His whole idiot culture is responsible for this.
He will blame guns and gun owners.
Scum.
They seem very well on their way to forgetting the entire thing already. Lots of reasons why they just cant follow the rules that are clearly in place.
MANSLAUGHTER.
Unless the gun had a mind of its own, it was Baldwin who pointed the gun at the director of photography and it was Baldwin who then cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger, while still pointing the gun at the director of photography.
It's doubt those actions were part of the movie script.
It doesn’t sound like he was doing a scene when this happened since he shot folks BEHIND the camera and not in front of it (unless he was supposed to fire into the camera?). I guess I could bend a little if this went the way of Brandon Lee, but it sounds like Baldwin was “goofing” off and shot two people, killing one (how live ammo got in the weapon... I don’t know). I’m sure more facts will come out over the next several days and we’ll have a clearer picture of what exactly happened.
Most likely what happened. It will probably turn out to crew/actors were playing real gun with real bullets at some earlier time and a real bullet got left in the gun.
I absolutely hate Baldwin, but this is probably a culmination of many people being negligent and not following protocols. Including him.
A setup is certainly a possibility. Probably a high probability.
Proving, fooling around and horseplay...someone's gonna get hurt.
Prayers for the victims, but this couldn’t have happened to a bigger, self-righteous, arrogant prick.
Bingo.
I was taught beginning about age 5, with a single shot .22 rifle.
The number ONE rule of firearm safety -
There is no such thing as an unloaded gun, until YOU check the chamber yourself.
Number TWO rule -
NEVER point a gun at anything you do not intend to kill, especially another person, even as a joke.
If I ever even pointed my BB gun at someone else my ass was whipped.
Never, ever play with a gun. Not even a bb gun.
Be sure of your aim and be sure nothing else is in the line of fire.
Make sure it is always cleaned, oiled and in proper working condition.
It is a deadly weapon, treat it accordingly.
I treat my bow the exact same way, except it’s really easy to see if it’s unloaded...
People can say what they want, try to blame he property manager, Mr gun control is the one responsible, he ignored just about every rule of firearm saety, especially the one about DO NOT POINT A GUN AT ANYONE ELSE.
People at pawn shops don’t understand me, I watch them check a gun then I check it myself, to be sure it is not loaded. It’s a lifetime habit, started at age 5. If my father handed me that .22 rifle and I failed to check it, I got a serious ass chewing. Even though I knew he never carried it in the car loaded. Even if I checked it and put it in the car myself before we left. Even if I watched him check it first.
It is ALWAYS loaded until I open it and check the chamber for myself. Period. I still do that right now. I have my 22 pistol beside me and checked it to be sure it was loaded before I brought it outside. (nice enough day to sit outside with the phone) It’s useless out here unloaded, especially if I see a snake...or armadillo...opossum...
Still can't fathom how a live round got in there, though. Should have been impossible with even the most basic precautions by whomever is in charge of weapons.
You have no idea how movies are shot, or what these people actually were doing at the time, do you?
When you watch a movie and you see a character firing a weapon towards the camera, do you ever wonder how they got that image? Spend a second thinking about that, and it becomes clear.
If it had been you or me, that tweet would be introduced by the prosecutor at trial as communication/declaration of intent.
If I was shooting any pistol at “close up range” if it didn’t hit a big bone, it would go though several people before it stopped.
So, if Baldwin was even handed a weapon that could shoot a live round something is amiss. Maybe Hollywood uses editing trickery to make the weapons cycle.
