Math Teachers are Taught that Elementary Math Education is a “Struggle for Justice”
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | September 8, 2021 | John Staddon

Does the average person have any idea what is now considered “normal” in the field of K-12 education? I already had some misgivings after reading Jay Schalin’s devastating review of the curricula in education schools: The Politicization of University Schools of Education: The Long March through the Education Schools. Nevertheless, I was unprepared for what I recently heard in a 2019 speech by a leader in math education, Deborah Loewenberg Ball. While the talk is now two years old, it is very unlikely that her perspective has improved.

Ball’s credentials place her at the apex of the education world: she is a professor and former dean at the University of Michigan School of Education, the Felix Klein Award lecturer at the 14th International Congress of Math Education (Shanghai, China, July 2021) — and the 2017 President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

The speech was Ball’s 2019 Summer Keynote address at the Standards Institute, titled Confronting & Dismantling Threats to Our Struggle for Justice in Classrooms, and it is a masterpiece. It is not a masterpiece of psychological science or educational theory or teaching math. It is a masterpiece of rhetoric that rests on false assumptions, persuades through empathic story-telling—and puts teachers, especially white teachers, in a very difficult position.

The talk centers on brief video clips of classroom interactions involving three black kids in a class of thirty fourth graders. Their task is to understand the idea of a fraction. I will just describe the first interaction.

Ball sets the scene with a slide that reads: “But our efforts to make change are still high-risk for reproducing patterns of racism and marginalization. Let’s look.” Apparently we are to see in the children’s answers and teachers’ responses to questions about fractions, “patterns of racism and marginalization.”

Looking at Deborah Ball's site, her perspective has not improved.

I thought it was about numbers. It must be my genetic white racism...

Our Struggle for Justice in Classrooms

If they just killed all the white kids in the class, the struggle for justice would be won!

I don't know what is more insane - the garbage these people are pushing or the fact that large numbers of Americans are totally buying into this garbage hook, line and sinker.

Their task is to understand the idea of a fraction.

"Well, Billy, what do you think the answer is?"
"I'm a racist?"
"Good job, Billy! You understand math very well! You could be an engineer. Except, of course, those jobs will be going to Shaniquah instead."

Brainwashing has replaced education.

When my daughter was in 5th grade she came home with a graded math test with a question marked wrong, she was quite upset. The answer was correct and the so-called teacher marked it wrong.

Hey look! It's simple. Teach math.

For the children who have a struggle, work harder. Stay overtime if you must. Do not lower standards; you do the children no favour if you do.

Anybody who wants to understand this will.

The issue is not the issue. The revolution is the issue.

Leftists want to turn children into the vanguard of the revolution. That means total obedience. That means zero thinking.

This is not difficult to understand.

Yeah
Well, you can bump and grind, it is good for your mind
Well, you can twist and shout, let it all hang out

But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution, no no no

Well, you can tear a plane in the falling rain
I drive a Rolls Royce 'cause it's good for my voice

But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution, no no no,
yeah

But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution, no way,
yeah, wow

Why do you post that way, as if to quote another poster? It is misleading.

The word "critical" has more than one meaning. When the Left talks about "Critical Thinking", I believe some people expect this to be about a measured way of considering a topic. Weighing the Pros and Cons. A rational approach. Let's think it all through and derive the best possible solution.

No. That's not what they mean.

It is of vital importance that the Marxists win their political revolution. A central component of the struggle -- a critical component -- is the brainwashing of young people. Critical Thinking places Marxism at the core of all thought processes. Do not think. Just regurgitate the Party Line. It is absolutely critical that you accomplish this task.

In this case the quote’s source has been disputed, but those are not words that I originally wrote, so I put them in italics.

Unlike Bidet, I don’t want to plagiarize others.

The only struggle for justice is keeping billionaires like Gates and academic Marxists from taking over our children’s “math education” that only turns skulls of mush into bodies of cannon fodder.

In my later years, I left programming and taught high school math/science.

I would correct any errors that the teachers had made in their tests/worksheets.

I even wrote programs for them on the TI's common in the schools so they could check their answers

Was surprised that some teachers got upset.

Never lacked for work though.

We are going to end up using the millenium, between God’s judgement for the righteous and the judgement of for the lost just to relearn what we should have been learning.

“If they just killed all the white kids in the class, the struggle for justice would be won!”

Pretty much their end game, although 98% of conservatives, including many (if not most) here, won’t believe it until they’re in the Cattle Cars.

We all know White, rich, liberal parents will NOT put their kids in urban public schools.

Because of America’s corrupt and controlled media, we have no idea how many, if even more than a handful, of black parents are outraged that the schools the nanny-state gives them access to are being turned into low-grade ideological holding-camps.
