Vessel congestion outside the busiest US gateway for trade with Asia is clogged with the most inbound container vessels in nearly six months.
Bloomberg data shows the number of containerships queuing off the coast of Los Angeles has reached 37 on Sunday evening, that’s three less than the all-time-high observed on Feb. 1.
On Sunday, the average waits for berth space, a designated location in a port used for mooring vessels when vessels are not at sea, was 6.2 days, compared with 5.7 in late June. That number topped eight days in April.
Readers may recall the collapse of the trans-pacific supply chains has been among the main reasons for soaring consumer goods prices. It’s also hardly a secret that the most vulnerable section of supply chains are West Coast ports where congestion remains off the charts.
The transpacific trade routes have experienced significant port delays in China in recent weeks because COVID outbreaks are shutting down terminals.
We’ve discussed the latest meltdown down of the trans-pacific supply chains in “Supply-Chains Brace For Collapse: Port Of LA Fears Repeat Of “Shipping Nightmare” As China Locks Down” and “Shippers Frantic After China’s Busiest Port Shuts Container Terminal Due To Covid.”
Goldman Sachs has explicitly warned that “port closures or stricter control measures at ports could also put further upward pressure on shipping costs, which are already very high.”
But as new data suggest, shipping congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is worsening and could even surpass levels seen earlier this year. The timing of this bottleneck is ahead of back-to-school and the holiday season when importers ramp up shipments of goods from Asia.
How’s that JIT inventory system workin’ out now?
Add to that the wisdom of single source supply. Trump tried to tell them, wean them off chicrap.
Here’s a novel idea: make it in the USA.
Global Warming strikes again!

Another crisis Biden can put in his tool chest. Cloward and Piven would be proud.
Gas shortage, chip shortage, parts shortage, food shortage, Covid-19...
This is a silent war with CHINA.
Interesting that since Clueless Joe is in office, The Longshoremen and the Union Boses are running the Ports of LA and Long Beach. Ships are only unloaded 5 days a week - 1 shift. All other Ports work 24/7.
Don’t buy stuff made in China if there is ANY alternative.
Another crisis Biden’s “Marx Reading’ fools can’t handle....
Three months ago I dropped of my 1991 Stihl chainsaw at the local dealer. It needs a new piston. They are still waiting on the part.
Stihl has commercials stating that their equipment is made in the USA. Yes, some are assembled in VA. Most likely they are foreign made parts.
My saw was originally made in Germany.
New windows and door replacement - 7 Month wait
New wooden Shed - 3 months min
RV repair - 2 month wait
New Pontoon boat - 3 to 4 months after order
The list goes on, I always ask (even if I have no intention of buying).
This same phenom occurred early on in the plandemic when no one could get toidy paper. Hundreds of vessels were floating off the western coast. Since they couldn’t get into a port (probably owned by the CCP — check it out) supplies ran out and panic set in.
One of my European lumber suppliers just had to send a boat load of lumber to Virginia Beach, VA port to be unloaded.
Originally it was supposed to be unloaded at Gateway Terminal in New Haven, CT. However, Gateway said there was NO ROOM at the port for more lumber.
A couple months ago the same importer had to send a ship of lumber to Canton in Baltimore instead of Ruckert Terminals. Canton is the terminal that typically deals with cruise ships.
They had absolutely no experience transloading lumber.
Now it makes sense...
There is less shipping from China due to terminals shut for Wuhan Flu. That should have meant less demand /less waiting at LA & Long Beach Terminals.
BUT UNION... They are running one shift (5 days, 8 hours) or maybe two shifts (5 days, 16 hours) instead of four shifts (24/7). Creating a bottleneck by running terminals at 25% or 50% capacity.
There is a house on the ocean in NH that they started construction on over a year ago. They tore down the old house in August 2020. As of this weekend they still did not have the garage doors and one of the exterior doors. This is a multi million dollar house directly on the Atlantic Ocean. They did not get all the Pella windows in until May of this year. SO, after a year they still do not have the house closed in. They still had OSB of the garage door openings two days ago.
