Here is a interview with Elon Musk that was post on YouTube today. If you are interested in the Starlink Internet Service, he makes some interesting announcements that I have not heard before.
Starting in August of 2021, next month, according to Elon Musk, Starlink will be open worldwide for service.
Later this year, a new Satellite 1.5 will be launched with laser interconnection between satellites and all future launches will include satellites with laser interconnection, next year Satellite 2.0 will be launched which is to be significantly more capable than the current satellite...
So if you are interested check it out.
Sounds great.
I like to sign up soon. Have to check my HughsNet contract though.
Thank you very much.
And when Starlink terminals soon become mobile there are many very interesting military implications. The system has enough satellites that it would be difficult for an adversary to knock out enough to make a significant difference, and can provide real time access to all places on earth.
No kidding, think of having multiple satellites in LEO over sites in China, Iran, Russia, etc....that have spying capabilities....
I know the military has already tested certain aspects of Starlink, I would not be surprised if they aren’t funneling to Starlink for R&D purposes...
Plus, when Elon lands on Mars I'll feel like I'm going along for the ride.
As regards HughesNet, I'm waiting a bit before cancelling service. It did allow my daughter to telecommute via Zoom to college classes. HughesNet has been bulletproof since installed a year ago. A comparison: HughesNet ping = 700ms, Starlink ping ~ 60ms or less.
The bill is about $20 less than what I was paying Verizon for DSL.
Went from viasat to hughsnet. 186.00 !!! For just internet and it sucked. Back to viasat and it seems to suck more but at least 120.00.
When Starlink stock becomes available then buy it. It will be huge. Internet, cell phone, streaming. Worldwide customers.
Tesla stock went to to $2,000 then split 5-1 then doubled.
They hardly make any cars compared to the big producers.
Starlink will have anyone who cannot get internet to sign up.
Currently paying $75 for just for Spectrum internet...any higher, I’d consider trying this.
I don't think Starlink will ever have spying capabilities. Completely different than the comm capabilities they are built for.
But, imagine relatively low cost, "disposable" drones that uplink to Starlink satellites in real time, safely saving data out of the reach of whatever country they happen to be over. The drones are fitted with self-destruct mechanisms, so if they are detected all the bad guys get is a debris field.
We are in southern Oregon about three hours south of Portland, OR, about 120 miles from the CA border. We live very close to Interstate 5, but we are in a valley and no tower has been able to reach us.
No problems yet, but this is a year with no snow in winter and no rain in spring. We are dangerously dry with no precipitation in sight.
Great info. Thanks!
If Musk goes to Mars he’ll die there. He’ll never return. Or could he?
Be a shame to lose such brilliant mind.
Northern Michigan where I am is the same.
4 feet below normal snow fall and bone dry.
10 acres of Cherries and 4 acres of Blueberries……all lost.
Got into the 70s and 80s in April (highly unusual) then in the teens at night in May. Even snowed a bit the first week of May.
Nothin’ but big beautiful healthy green trees with no fruit.
