Deconstructing Racism in Mathematics Instruction
White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions. Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.The table below identifies the ways in which white supremacy shows up in math classrooms.
Dismantling white supremacy in math classrooms
We see white supremacy culture show up in the mathematics classroom even as we carry out our professional responsibilities outlined in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Using CSTPas a framework, we see white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom can show up when:
• The focus is on getting the “right” answer.
• Independent practice is valued over teamwork or collaboration.
• “Real-world math” is valued over math in the real world.
• Students are tracked (into courses/pathways and within the classroom).
• Participation structures reinforce dominant ways of being.
Don’t be under their flight paths!

Getting wrong answers in mathematical problems is a sure path to utter failure.
There was once a state legislator who wondered why the ratio of a diameter of a circle to its circumference could not be simply expressed as “3”, rather than the long and irrational number “3.1416xxxxxxx”. It would only work if circles were somehow magically hexagons.
Which works perfectly well in a beehive. There, in the honeycomb, hexagons are merely highly compressed circles.
Math is the latest reality to get rid of.
Marriage, gender, etc. - now even math will be made subjective.
I assume they’ll only fly from Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago and Oakland.

Very true! Back when I first started teaching in public schools (1980s), we teachers determined our own curricula. The math teachers would meet as a group, the English teachers would meet as a group, etc. We knew what our kids needed.
That all changed around 2005. As you noted, Ed majors with the latest garbage “research” took over. I told a story about that in my post #17.
That minority-owned, woman-run, democrat-party-donating, multi-racial, ultra-awarded company DID DROP their bridge down on innocent Miami drivers. Killed quite a few them too.
