Deconstructing Racism in Mathematics Instruction
White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions. Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.The table below identifies the ways in which white supremacy shows up in math classrooms.
Dismantling white supremacy in math classrooms
We see white supremacy culture show up in the mathematics classroom even as we carry out our professional responsibilities outlined in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Using CSTPas a framework, we see white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom can show up when:
• The focus is on getting the “right” answer.
• Independent practice is valued over teamwork or collaboration.
• “Real-world math” is valued over math in the real world.
• Students are tracked (into courses/pathways and within the classroom).
• Participation structures reinforce dominant ways of being.
Or: 12345=0 and 65891=4
Only in America. Not in China or Russia.

So there’s this article on how it’s White Supremacy to expect people to get the correct answer on math quizes.
And another article on FR is entitled, “’If white people were still here, this wouldn’t happen’: the majority-Black town flooded with sewage (Illinois)”
So it sounds like White Supremacy is considered a good thing. Am I interpreting this correctly?
One of the more poignant moments was when a black student asked the black teacher with his class that had been integrated over if the extra 5 points were still available for putting their name on the test???
That happens for all students now, not just the black ones. Equality the leftist way means everyone gets dumbed down equally.
Build a bridge when any result is acceptable.
Back when I was teaching physics, one of my supervisors told me not to correct wrong answers in classroom discussions. Because that would stifle creativity.
Creativity is a great thing if you're teaching them how to compose limericks or write a novel. In STEM fields getting the right answer is preferable. Glad you didn't buy into that claptrap.

I was lucky in that my supervisors knew nothing about physics. So they weren’t quite sure what the heck I was doing.
The English and history teachers weren’t so lucky. When they strayed from those stupid guidelines (my post #17) they could, and did, get caught. I saw some good teachers get fired as a result.

It is even worse now.
When your kid says 12+16 = 28, and the teacher marks it as wrong.
Happened to us. We were called in to the teacher as our child wasn’t doing it the new math way. We told the teacher just keep marking it as “wrong” - we don’t care, as long as it is the correct answer.
Ours just did it the “old fashioned” way in her head. New math would have gone something like:
12=10
16=20
So that makes 30.
Then add in 2 (from the 12) so that is 32.
But subtract the 4 (it was 16, not 20),
so 32-4 = 28! EASY!!??
In Engineering school, we occasionally had classes in the Education building.
I was shocked to see paper dolls on the walls. People were getting college degrees for doing that.
And now they think they can impose their birdbrained crap on us. Beyond stupid.
This isn’t fair! I have dyslexia and my usual math score is between 85-89%. I never get the A. I want my A grade. So what if I’m carless? I want my A.
With this kind of grading, I’d be on the Dean’s list, score a perfect LSAT and be at my goal weight in Weight Watchers.
I want this new math.
