One can still hope, if you get my drift.

In a completely unrelated story, rolls of Reynolds Wrap have been disappearing from the shelves of Los Angeles supermarkets....
After reading this headline I found myself trying to say “mysterious helicopters with peculiar antennae” fast ten times.
Maybe I need a break from current events.

What domestic terrorism are they talking about?!
We had an entire summer of black liberation mayhem where while cities were sacked and many streets burned to the ground and nobody dared called it “terrorism” or even lifted a finger to stop it.
Now you have ONE protest at the capital which was SO BAD that Congress finished its business THAT night - EVERYBODY OBEYED the curfew and left and suddenly we’ve got 20k troops in DC and military on alert all over the cities?!
Oh for crying out loud. Its what, 2, 3 little jet ranger types? No FLIR pods, no gun mounts, looks like a DF antenna on the boom. Probably belong to some Dr. Evil type, don’t ya think?
Must be running short of aluminum foil in Cali.
Helicopters??? Probing???
Are we going back to the good old days of the “black helicopter” threads of FR past?
I'm surprised Hope hasn't been cancelled for some stupid reason yet. They've tried (and maybe even succeeded) taking John Wayne's name off Santa Ana airport. I don't know if that went through.
It looks to me like a radio detection attenna.Used to determine the location that a radio signal is coming from.
These aircraft typically will circle a location that is under surveillance for hours on end, as many as five or six hours straight is not uncommon, with the location under observation at the center of the circle. They tend to fly a radius that places them at a mile or so away from the surveilled location, depending on the aircraft type in use.
Most of these aircraft belong to the State Department, which maintains a large fleet of aircraft that are loaned out to other federal agencies. The users in these cases may be FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, etc., depending upon the situation. Aircraft types that I’ve seen doing this have ranged from Cessna 210s to old Metroliners, to even a BA-146 four engine regional jet.
I also know from some checking around that a TV station helicopter pilot friend of mine did years ago that some of these aircraft have a system onboard that is similar to a military laser target designator pod. Apparently, they can lock the laser onto an individual vehicle, and the autopilot will then automatically follow the vehicle. The radar tracks make it clear that the typical mission involves circling a location for long periods of time, likely waiting for whoever they’re monitoring to become mobile, and then you can see the aircraft following highways, tracking the vehicle, until it eventually begins circling again once the vehicle reaches its destination.
So, there are eyes in the sky most of the time, at least if you live in a major city.
Probably just some CIA operatives moonlighting for Google Maps. :)

Really annoy them: get a commercial-grade drone and follow them around town. *snicker*
Just college football coaches out on the recruiting trail in the swag copters.
Lidar equipped for surveys. Or camera equipped for utility and tax assessments. Nothing nefarious.
