This is the 3rd such list I have posted about but it is always fun:

10: The Importance of Being Earnest 2002: Never got into Oscar Wilde.

9: Brideshead Revisited (2008): I saw this movie and the fact this has never come up in the discussions here says something. From the discussion, the original Jeremy Irons series blows this away.

8: Downton Abbey (2019)

7:The House Of Mirth (2000): LMAO!!! "Wrong sir, wrong!" Has the person who wrote this even seen the movie or read the book. This is not English. The writer of this list even calls Miss Lily Bart an Englishwoman when she is American. The novel was written by Edith Wharton and portrays the heights of New York City society prior to the Panic of 1907. I have seen this movie. Gilliam Anderson is flat as a pancake in portraying Miss Bart.

6: Jane Eyre (2011): Have not seen this adaptation. I doubt it will topple my favorite: Stephens/Wilkson BBC Mini-series.

5: The Remains of the Day (1993): Have seen this and enjoyed it. I think it is fascinating man originally from Japan but raised in England is one of the foremost writers in English.

4: Emma (2020): Just got the DVD in the mail yesterday. This will be my third adaptation of "Emma"

3: Shakespeare In Love (1998): Nope...I cannot stand Gwyneth Paltrow.

2: Sense And Sensibility (1995): I mentioned this before what as one of the best.

1: Pride And Prejudice (2005): Never seen this. Would rather watch the Firth/Ehle mini-series.

brigerton was absolute crap, I turned it off after 5 minutes. un-needed sex scenes and the black washing of English Georgian society. No thanks

Gilliam Anderson is flat as a pancake in portraying Miss Bart.

She was AWFUL in both this, and her wispy portrayal of Miss Havisham in "Great Expectations" (she wouldn't even wear the ONE SHOE that was key part of the character). Who gave her the idea that she had the chops for this sort of thing (cf. Diana Rigg in Bleak House)?

She managed to get these kinds of roles when she is best off (I presume) at "X-files" type fare.

I cannot stand Gwyneth Paltrow.

She was acceptable in Emma, because she was playing a young woman who was full of herself. Unfortunately, that screen adaptation was done poorly. I have no problem with dropping/combining characters and subplots in the interst of time, but that movie had an archery scene used in ALL the advertising that was not in the book, and was handled like a sitcom/light romcom.

Look. It's Jane Austen. You cannot improve on it, only not ruin it. Adapt as necessary for the screen, but stick with rented pianos, day trips for haircuts, idle gossip and English dances. She's done the heavy lifting.

No thanks. I have better things to do with my time than watch Netflix crap. Netflix and the Obamas belong together. That said, I prefer watching Masterpiece Theater when I want to see “period” pieces, even though it’s Public Television.

Been watching Poirot and Murder, She Wrote. Good old fashioned mysteries with little or no political leftism.

We watched “The Crown.” Enjoyed seeing what turds the members of the British royal family are.

Upstairs, Downstairs is excellent, would probably seem archaic to a youngster used to HD video..

The Duchess of Duke Street was another good one.

Thanks. I was wondering if it were worth my time - I have little patience for the things you described - but have seen this show mentioned all over the internet as the second coming of the greatest show ever.

Now I know why. Won’t waste my time.

“Shakespeare In Love (1998)”
I saw this and loathed it.

“Brideshead Revisited (2008): “
Didn’t watch it because the reviews said they rewrote it to make it PC.. The older version had a realistic portrayal of a man consumed by homosexual vice.

” Pride And Prejudice (2005)”
The Furth/Ehle version is better but this one though flawed is OK. The cast is excellent except for Keira Knightley. Her Elizabeth Bennet is a haughty sourpuss.
“Emma” I’m a fan of the 1996 Kate Beckensale version. I’ve never seen a version that is close to the book.

Gilliam Anderson is flat as a pancake in portraying Miss Bart. I think she did OK as Maggie Thatcher in The Crown. That voice...

Otherwise yes, best suited to X-Files type roles, although the re-boot sucked.

Amen. And to think this won the Academy Award for Best Picture over the far superior "Goodfellas" - which is on a lot of critics' "top ten best movies of all times" lists.

Must have had something to do with Gweynth Paltrow and Harvey Weinstein...

That’s as good an explanation as any for the Academy Award.
I used to watch all the nominated movies. I stopped doing that shortly after.
