While the total number of firearms sales for 2020 won’t be known for another couple of weeks, it is already evident that last year broke all the records. With just weeks until President-Elect Joe Biden is sworn in and moves into the White House, sales of guns are only likely to increase, and that means ammo prices are spiking across the nation.
Ammo in Short Supply
As numerous reports have highlighted, a driving factor in the increase of sales was due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but it wasn’t just gun owners stocking up. 2020 saw the largest increase in first-time gun owners. That trend may not continue into 2021 – there are after all only so many people who can or will become first-time gun owners.
However, even if gun sales dip in 2021, the same is unlikely to be true of ammunition sales. In other words, if 2020 broke the records for firearms, 2021 could set a new benchmark for ammunition sales and continue to build on last year’s strong sales.

In a functioning capitalist economy, if the demand for something is so high and the supply is so low, that it’s insanely profitable to manufacture this item, more manufacturers would enter the fray.
I’m guessing the regulations are prohibitive for startups?
Practice ammo becomes tactical reserve.
When supply outpaces demand. Odd that NEW manufacturing isn't being substantially increased to meet demand.
Doesn’t matter unless the citizenry is willing to use it on a massive scale. Otherwise, it is just a comfort blanket.
When Kamala Harris casts the tie breaking vote to pass a new AWB, and millions of people give up their firearms rather than jump through the federal registration and licensing hoops that will be put in place.
guess I might be using full metal jacket target ammo for self defense.
Apparently the investment cost to up production is huge, component (primer chemicals) shortages remain, and historically when the fervor ends, prices crash and render the investment in capacity useless.
(given the complete communist takeover of America)
Will CWII start before they attempt confiscation?
” ... and historically when the fervor ends, prices crash and render the investment in capacity useless.”
With so many new gun owners, and the continuing decline of American society, it doesn’t seem the fervor will end anytime soon.
But, if the cost to increase production is high, it’s a big risk to bet on my theory.
Not really regulation related from what I’ve read.
It’s the fact the ammo manufacturers are unwilling to invest the enormous capital and time in building new plants, or expanding existing, as the results of one election will make demand drop significantly.
They’re then stuck with the debt they incurred to build up, and excess capacity will go unused.
This year will be epic.
Lots of manufacturers in other countries. Czech Republic, Serbia, Brazil, Israel, Russia, just to name a few. I’m wondering if the incoming regime will pass any exec orders restricting its import?
My guess is they will.
I agree, but also millions won’t. Bear in mind that a number of states already have some form of explicit or de facto state-level registration that makes it impossible to hide. Additional millions will simply give up. Right now, California residents can drive to Arizona or Nevada to play with their semiauto toys. Massachusetts resident can drive to New Hampshire, etc. When the ban hammer comes down everywhere, many people will decide the juice ain’t worth the squeeze, give up their toys and find a new hobby.
” Will CWII start before they attempt confiscation?”
No. I have oceanfront property just outside of Phoenix that’ll sell before there’s any kind of wide scale civil conflict or even significant unrest in this country.
You mean the manufacturers actually do a profit analysis before they add new infrastructure and staff?
There you go...throwing objective reasoning into a debate on the internet. LOL.
I lost all of mine in a freak boating accident.
There is no “president-elect” until the whole matter of the stolen ballots is figured out.
I see No.6 already commented on that.
That’s what I get for not reading all the comments before posting.
When an ATF agent with a list of every “it’s not registration” 4473 form you’ve ever signed and sales records for every 80% lower you’ve ever bought shows up at your door, tell him that. I’m sure there will be belly laughs all around and he’ll leave, never to bother you again.
