Kodak is a first step: Trump White House plans new ways to break Chinese supply chain dominance

As the Trump White House this week announced a major deal to pivot photo giant Kodak toward pharmaceutical manufacturing, it made clear this was just the first step in a broader plan to break Chinese dominance of supply chain in manufacturing.

With a focus first on healthcare manufacturing, the White House brokered a $765 million loan to Kodak after noticing 90% of the main ingredients of the most common pharmaceuticals taken each day in the United States are manufactured abroad.

Adam Boehler, CEO of U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, is a lead administration official on the Kodak deal, and said the White House plans to move beyond drugs toward other medical supply areas vulnerably exposed during the coronavirus pandemic.

"We're going down the list," Boehler said in an interview with Just the News. "Look at masks, gloves. Right now, rubber gloves, they're 80%, 90% made outside of the country, we can't have that risk. It doesn't mean we can't buy from certain sources. But you've got to think about it like a backup generator. You've got to have those sources in the United States, too. So we're going through list of items of PPE. We're looking at generic pharmaceuticals, a number of other areas as well."

The White House said the Kodak Pharmaceuticals project is expected to add 350 new direct jobs to Kodak, along with "thousands of jobs" due to the "multiplier effect" of new demand within the local community of upstate Rochester, New York. That region has been decimated by Rust Belt trends, and Boehler said he's hopeful that Kodak will serve as a model for future federal-state partnerships to invest in rebuilding the United State's industrial base.

"Kodak is the first example," Boehler said. "If you think about Kodak, you think about film.

Yup. He doesn’t get it and obviously doesn’t understand business.

It is imperative that we minimize all trade with China.

Yes, but...

Those of us of a certain age still remember the smell of the darkroom.

Remember that?

Remember all of those exotic chemicals needed to capture an image from particles of light, and make it visible and permanent?

THAT is valuable stuff.

Yes. And now the largest photographic product manufacturing facility in the world, employing over 15,000 employees in over 154 different buildings spanning its 1,300 acres is being repurposed to manufacture pharmaceuticals. The nature and characteristics of a film plant work well for pharma.

“Have you ever been to Rochester, NY, seen the facility, or met any of the people there?”

Years ago, when camera film was still a thing, I picked up several loads there. That place is FRIGGIN’ HUGE. Like a city within itself.
Hope they go balls to the wall and have to build more buildings.

I’ve been to Rochester and Buffalo.
They both made me miss Wilmington DE.
I’ve never been to the plant.

As for your other post, I didn’t say anything about Trump not understanding business. I merely was wondering why not a different state, specifically a swing state.

Because that's where the unused Kodak facility happens to be sitting. It's not about helping New York, it's about helping the U.S. get out from under reliance upon China for pharmaceuticals. The President is doing it because it's what's needed for Americans, not because a poll told him he would gain political points for it. Making decisions according to poll numbers is the way Clinton and Obama ran things, Trump is trying to actually fix things.

Who said anything about polls?
If we don’t win this election, this is meaningless.
The Senate better extend UI federal benefits or we are likely to lose.

Look at it this way, and look what Cumo (sp) and Deblasio(sp) are doing to NYC and New York. They are single handily destroying both places.

President Trump turns a bankrupt company into a major pharmaceutical chemical supply Co. using a ready made factory. hiring who knows how many. He could turn New York into a swing state maybe even red!

“Why are we helping NY?

we’re not helping NY: we’re helping America. We’re leveraging unused chemical manufacturing infrastructure and expertise, as well as industries, communities, and skilled workers who’ve been devastated by Democrat policies of shipping the manufacture of everything, including strategic medications ... and best of all, we’ll be breaking china’s monopoly over manufacturing our critical medications ...

this is actually a BRILLIANT initial step because it leverages existing, unused chemical manufacturing capabilities in a community rife with out-of-work expertise ... this is truly a win-win-win situation ... btw, Kodak stock went from two bucks to 30 bucks within a couple of days of this announcement, though it’s lost a bit of that extraordinary gain ...

Eastman was so picky, they grew their own cattle. To make sure the gelatin was pure and not stuffed with chemicals from the food the cattle was fed. That gelatin went into film and photo emulsion but the same gelatin could make some clean pills...
just sayin...

Oh and there’s the democrat policies driving jobs out of NYS thing, but seriously we March into the Superbowl four years in a row!

I used to use your guys on Madden.
Thurman Thomas could run, and Reed and Beebe could catch.
I’d usually be Bruce Smith on defense.
Occasionally I’d be Talley or Bennett.

The part of NY where Kodak resides supports Trump - lots of conservatives up here, even though the city of Rochester is Demonrat.
