Starlink Update - first look at User Terminals and Ground Station Antennas.
Youtube ^ | 07/18/20 | Elon Musk

Posted on 07/18/2020 10:33:06 AM PDT by srmanuel

Found this video on Youtube from a guy with very few subscribers who pulled together various pictures from reddit and other places from people who have gotten a sneak peak at the user terminals needed to connect to Starlink, Elon Musk's space based internet service.

If the User Terminal/Home Antenna looks like the prototypes once Starlink gets up and running I am super excited and would not hesitate to install one.

Let's hope performance comes close to the talked speed.

I subscribed to their email several months ago and received another email several days ago requesting a physical address when beta testing proceeds to that point.

I got the same request but didn’t give them my actual address. They have my zip code, which ought to be enough (and so I wasn’t sure the second email was genuine).

We’ll see.

The ground terminal antenna/dish for home use look very appealing...

I hope that Starlink is successful. There are still rural areas where dependable internet service is not available. Thank you, Mr. Musk, you are truly a visionary.

That happened to me also. BUT, when I tried to input my physical address their system would not accept it.

I don't know if the problem is at my end, at their end, or because some GPS databases do not have my address. (Some people can't find my house with their GPS.)

I’m rural and different carriers and GPS’s have slightly different formatting of my address so it is sometimes challenging to figure out which one they want.

Plug in. Point at sky. Can be done in either order.

My how things change.

Over 20 years ago, a friend was interested in getting sat internet until I pointed out that he would still need a land line account for xmt, and that he would only be receiving from the sat, albeit at a higher bandwidth.

Sort of lost its appeal after that.

Depending on the user cost, connection speed and capacity, and installation difficulty, this could be a major challenge to cable companies.

In my location, other than wireless/cellular, the only competitor to cable is CenturyLink and they are almost laughable. The fastest capability they have for my location is 3 Mbps. My current cable is 150 Mbps [$70/mo] for mid-level and 10 Mbps for their lowest.

Pretty good, the satellites are in low orbits, not way, way out there at geosynchronous distance.

Here’s an additional video about who is mostly likely eligible for public best test.....

Looks like the upper Northern USA and Lower Canada are the first areas to be beta tested, specifically Washington State area......

Latitude coordinates were evidently filed with the FCC along with a conceptional home router....

If you qualify and want to proceed with beta testing, an NDA about non-disclosure has to be signed.....

Take a look...

Starlink is intended for rural locations. It can’t handle the density of urban areas. They’ll accept some urban customers, but there will be rationing.

It looks like when it rolls out it will start in Washington State and then work out to 44-52* latitude.

My wife and I are planning on moving to her farm out in the boonies. This would be great since we would have to pay to have the Internet strung out to the house.

Right this minute I have been paying $80/month for what is advertised as 7 Mbps, but which is really closer to 5. It is microwave internet, needing line of sight to a tower.

I would jump for joy at 150 Mbps at $70.

If I could stop giving Comcast any money, I would regardless of how much it costs.
