In a report on Friday marking America’s Independence Day, CNN reporter Leyla Santiago, reporting from Mount Rushmore, where President Trump spoke, referred to Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson not as two of the greatest presidents in America’s history, but simply as “two slave owners.” Santiago stated, “Kicking off the Independence Day Weekend, President Trump will be at Mount Rushmore, where he’ll be standing in front of a monument of two slave owners and on land wrestled away from Native Americans told that uh, be focusing on the effort to ‘tear down our country’s history.’”

Washington and Jefferson were slave owners, but they didn’t invent slavery. I am more interested in how both men questioned the institution of slavery and the need to end it.

I am glad that President Trump did not attempt to give equal time to the flaws of the American hero’s that he highlighted in his speech last night. Once again, he modeled behavior that we can all emulate. We usually go out of our way to be fair and considerate, while the left does the exact opposite.

Aside from that, many families of various races that have been here awhile had family members who owned slaves, while others in the same family tree helped destroy the institution. Same is true of the Revolutionary War: Tories and Patriots. Some were conscientious objectors due to religion.
